Yeah, so my D40 gets a "Lens Not Attached" error message when I clearly was not changing lenses. Any cause for concern?
Or better yet, is there a way to fix it?
It does go away after a while though.

Mine sometimes refuses to show aperture when I have the lens connected, it gives me this after the letter f "--"
Try disconnecting and reconnecting the lens.
Also, if the lens has an aperture ring, make sure you have it set to the max aperture number when you attach it. If it has a lock, you need it to be locked in place. If that doesn't work, try cleaning the contacts on your mounting ring on both the lens and the camera body. I've told that this is generally the result of a poor connection\communication between camera and lens.
Yup, willis is right on the money. Cleaning the contacts should do the trick, at least that's been my experience.
We had the same problem. The fix is to free up the contact that sits apart from the ones on the mount collar.

Thanks for posting here, but I haven't had the error message come up in a long time now.
I've been using the 35mm 1.8 a lot lately, and it hasn't come up yet for that lens.
Hey NSXType-R, what lens was giving the trouble when mounted onto the D40? A few years ago I had a similar occurence with my D80 when I was traveling in Vietnam. I took it in to a shop when I got home and it was determined to be the rear of the lens being the issue. The contact points were no longer aligned with the camera body index. To this day I'm not sure how this occured there must have been significant impact to the combo at sometime that I was not aware of.
The mounting spring might also be jammed or dirty. This is located on the inside of the lenses thread beside the glass element. Depending on the lens you are using this spring could be medal or plastic. Cheaper lenses use plastic and this spring can be easily broken. I broke one on my 18-135 with D40 combo I was using back in 2007. Cost me just $37 to fix. Please post again if you solve this! I'm curious ^_~
Maybe every lens you use except the 35mm 1.8 was an issue? Willis is right about setting the max aperature, but then again you can even depress the shutter if this is not set so it must be something else...

This was with the 18-135 with the D40. I can't reproduce the error message on the spot, and I haven't had the error message come up for a long time since posting this thread. I don't usually clean the contacts anyway, so that might be the issue. I don't think I can set max aperture, it's a G lens.
Usually, I just remove the lens and remount it, I think it fixes it that way.
Ah thats interesting that was the same lens I had to replace the mounting spring on. Anyways, it sounds like you solved your problem with a simple cleaning! Hopefully the problem doesn't return.

Nope, I never wash my contacts. I just change lenses as quickly as humanly possible.
Thanks, I hope so too. It's annoying when I need a shot quickly. :(
