If this is your first Dslr, I would say buy D90 because even the new one comes out this month, it would not make any difference than the current D90 for the first time DSLR user. But if this is your upgrade, than I would say wait.

I would also expect the replacement to cost much more than the D90. The D90 is generally available for less than $800, the replacement is likely to cost over $1000 (probably closer to $1100-1200 on release). The D90 is a great camera, I'm extremely happy with mine.

It's my first personal dslr..I've some experience, now I need mine!! Your considerations are right, if I keep waiting I will never take a picture! But it's quite expensive for an amateur, so I just want to spend correctly my money, without regrets and ifs!

No offense, but this topic has been discussed many times in the past. Please search the forum first before posting.

I'm sorry, ok!

I have to say that even though a similar topic may have been covered multiple times before, each time the questions are asked there is a slightly different spin to them for the specific person asking and can add some nice insight.
Besides, it's not like there are tons of new topics being brought up on this forum every minute of the day.

Reposting the same topics and not using search has already been "debated" before and it turned ugly. So watch what you guys say and lets not have that happen again.
Welcome to the forum Starscream. Here are the rumored specs of the D7000.

Niko, are you recommending I do a search for this debate? (said very tongue-in-cheek) Haha.

I bought my D90 last December. SIX days later there was a replacement rumour. Worse, I really wanted almost all the 'new features' that were rumoured. I was gutted. And now I'm also annoyed that there is a £60 ($90) cashback deal here in the UK now.
But, whatever, I've had nine weeks of pure pleasure from my D90 already. I think it's fantastic. And it will be just as fantastic the day after the 'new D90' as it was the day before.

Couldn't have said it better myself, John. I still think it doesn't make sense for Nikon to hurry to replace the D90 and outresolve the D300s unless they're planning on replacing both at the same time. Given that the D300s just came out, I don't think the D90 is likely to be replaced for a few months yet.

If they'd add a line for stills only at a reduced price I'd be a happy camper. I also don't like the myriad of buttons on the D90. Put fewer on that can be customized. The articulated screen screams cheap and will break. I come from film and this has nothing to do with technological breakthroughs. They connected the screen with a hinge, big deal. How about a flip top box and a two way radio? Of course the ubiquitous GPS. Oh gee. I don't know where I was. But here are the coordinates. Throw in a compass while you’re at it. It's like the Apple iPod. Soon people will stand in line at an Apple outlet and wait for the iWipe to clean them. No, I’m in the minority apparently. I want a solid camera with an excellent chipset that shows me what I’m going to shoot with the settings I have. I don’t want features that are not going to improve the photography experience and only make using a camera a marketing ploy. I don't want a 200MP sensor that takes noisy shots. Make it right and I'll buy it. T

I have been waiting for the D90 replacement for quite sometime now.I totally agree with you Birds, i dont want any of those fancy stuff in the replacement either. I dont even care if it dosent have video capability, thats my personal opinion. I know lot of people are waiting for HD video.Anything more then 12.3 Mp for god sake, better iso range, good strong built. If they stuff it up then D90 is my plan B. either way iam gonna take good pics.

Help me out here, I'm having trouble with your logic.
" If they'd add a line for stills only at a reduced price I'd be a happy camper " Trouble is, I suspect leaving out the movie functionality would make little difference to the price (ultimately a movie is simply a long sequence of stills). And, of course, you can remove the movie functionality after purchase as I did - don't use it.
" don't like the myriad of buttons on the D90. Put fewer on that can be customized " You can customise the camera by only using the buttons you want.
" The articulated screen screams cheap and will break " There's no articulated screen on the D90. I wish there was; 30 years ago I'd gladly throw myself flat on the floor to get the right angle, but I'm a bit too old and stiff for that now.
" Of course the ubiquitous GPS " There's no GPS on the D90. I'm a big fan of GPS. Having taken tens of thousands of film photos over the last 40 years I've lost track of when and where many of them were taken - if only digital cameras with GPS had been available.
" shows me what I’m going to shoot with the settings I have " I like all the auto settings on modern cameras. It frees me up to concentrate on composing the shot. I can (and do) override the auto settings on occasions, but in many cases they work just fine without my help.
Bottom line is simple. If the D90 doesn't impress, buy something else that does.

Sounds like birds and evil are hoping for a new film camera to replace the D90.

I love that the D90 is a compressed imitation of a Pro DSLR and not anywhere as close to the "easy point and shooting DSLR photography" the D5000 and D3000 are built for. While not a "Pro" spec model the amount of buttons and commands make me feel like I'm not deprived of anything as I can fully control anything I want and don't need mostly menu's to do it. (except that Full frame of the D700 and the 51 points of AF and the butt on layout of the D3s (although the D90 has most of the buttons anyway))

Why Niko, you have never heard of FLIM? "smirk"

What do you use now, Birds and evilcruze?
I'm with anaxagoras and can't see where you're coming from on some of these arguments.Posted 3 years ago # -
as someone else said, take that cash and put it into medium format if you're planning on getting serious with your work, the results will outshine anything from a D90, or a D3S/X for that matter.
a basic hasselblad system can be had for ~$800, or you can get a Bronica SQ-Ai for 350-400 and spend another 400 on getting some lenses, and have a mind blowingly awesome system.

I wouldn't put the D3X in that list Chris. It really is an incredible camera. And in your scenario the type of film you use would matter more than just the camera.
