Will they be updating the 85mm f/1.4 with AF-S/VR/ED? I know that no one here has a crystal ball, but have you guys heard anything? I'm interested in getting it, but I don't want to buy it and have a new version come out a day or two later.
Thanks!

No news I've seen. Buy the 85 f/1.8 now, then get the f/1.4 when it get's updated some day. It will happen but probably not this year.
I guess if VR is that important, don't buy it. But I've got 85 1.4, and it's most exquisite, superb and fantastic. If you bought it, you wouldn't regret - it's a time tested "Cream Machine" after all! And what if Nikon discontinue this? And what if new version is crap? (unlikely, but... things happen:) It will only go up in value! Not trying to sell it to you, but I really love this lens..
I have two of the 85/1.4 Ai-S, and it's one of my all time favorites.
If it is priced anywhere close to the new AF-S 24mm lens, I will not care when it is announced or available. The prices for an amateur or for a hobby are becoming far to high.
Looking at the 50 1.8D, 1.4D, and 1.4G compared with the 85 1.8D and 1.4D, I wouldn't expect an 85 1.4G to be more than $1600, but that still seems like a lot when you can get the 85 1.8D for around 1/4 that price. It's a great lens.
Welcome to the forum, Dean.
The 85mm f/1.8 has often been thought to be your "best bang for the buck" in Nikon lenses. And, the 1.4 takes it to a higher level - at a higher price. We've be hoping for an updated 85mm f/1.4 AF-S, but Nikon has been silent. I would suggest picking us the 1.8 version - a little over $400 new. Or, get a beautiful 1.4 USED - usually about $800.
