I check NR regularly, and I'm pleased to see the new forum feature. I find the black theme pretty hard on the eyes, but I seem to remember that this came up before and the majority voted in favour.
Forum posts allow ul/ol/li tags, but the styling looks a bit odd with borders:
- List-item one
- List-item two
Posted 4 years ago # -
I will remove the borders. So far I got like 3 complains about the black background color. I am afraid to change it to while, but I may experiment to change the background only for the text part and leave the rest black - just like dpreview.

borders - gone, thanks!

1 On the colors, might consider a dark gray with black text. good contrast, yet easy on the eyes. I've got some experience with sites, etc etc, and that combo worked fine. I have no problems with as it is but .......
I'd setup a page with a table, with each panel a different combo of background & text,
members could pick from, and go from there.2 does your host offer a canned forum, or did you have to fart around w/ setting your own? Most hosts, include a free forum, if not there are some really great free forums, depending on the platform you are on - I am too lazy to type a few keystrokes to find out on my own. I can't recall a good one off the top of my head. Go to SOURCEFORGE.COM will reveal many gems. Perhaps more than you'd care for.
3 can you add "reply" and have it display in tree/indented format?
4 perhaps it displays different in M$ Explorer but in Firefox, the post box is just ten lines deep. Might consider 15-20?!?!
5 does this accept HTML tags?
FWIW ........ just some little crap.

I second that, because on longer threads now it would be nearly impossible to see to which post an answer is directed at.

Please don't change the light text on black background. This is much easier on my eyes than the reverse. I do, however, think it's a great idea to have an option in the nav to set either a light on dark or dark on light style sheet to appease everyone, though.

I just remembered that text/bkground colors, on the best free BB proggies, is was poster setting via the acct profile window. And along with it, a whole plethora of other choices, including blocking out/"IGNORE", etc etc.
And contrary to what you might hear, or 1st inclination, the task of setting up one of those nowadays is a no brainer. A few years back it was a bit more complex, but now, the UI is very straight forward. You can either check out the features list of one, or download it, then read through the setup help file.

Gary, I had to tweak this forum by myself. My host doesn't offer any forums for now. BBPress is open source and is pretty new. Similar to WordPress they have additional plug-ins, but at that point the offering is still limited. I do believe that this will turn out to be a great platform, it just needs some time (just like WordPress). I will investigate further if I can do threaded comments (in WordPress there used to be a plugin for it). I will see also what it will take to give the user the option to custom change the background color.
Thank you all for your feedback.Posted 4 years ago # -
According to my findings GoDaddy - your host right? - does offer free BB programs, and good ones at that!!! Generally you don't need to install it, but rather activate it, and once done, you set it up, which is a simple process.
Its been about 6 years since I worked w/GoDaddy so I have no clue on what they offer now. I was ready to setup a BB for a domain they were hosting, for a project I was involved with, but on deeper reflection I would have been better off playing russian roulette with a fully loaded PISTOL, then opening up that can of worms, so I never took it any further.
G'luck.

Gary - it was godaddy, now is Media Temple. So far I am happy with bbPress. Yes, it is very limited but also very small and compact. I have not found any real bugs, just missing features.

Okee dokee, that means the flip has not caught up w/WHOIS yet.
The one I was going to install about a year or so ago was mind numbingly powerful and definitely intimidating if not familiar with such animals, yet very simple to set-up. There are some 2.2+ million copies installed so you know that thing was well debugged, and just about any feature anyone could think of has been thrown at it. Anyway, just trying to lend a helping hand.
G'luck.

Love the forums. Keep up the good work. There aren't that many dedicated Nikon forums out there.

When a thread gets more posts than fit on one page (e.g. Photo-a-day: NR edition), then the first page should also display linked page numbers behind the thread title. If the number of pages exceeds e.g. five, then it could display 1 ... 6, 7, 8 with the numbers of the first page and the last three pages linked.

might look else where for the forum backbone engine phpBB for example
this one will be unmanageable (not user friendly) when it grows
Posted 4 years ago # -
monty11 - I will look into this
nau - this is more like a test, if we get enough people interested in a NR forum, I will invest in something better and more solid, for now we have 471 users. This phpbb looks good - I will give it a try. Thanks!Posted 4 years ago # -
any time,
the other thing you might want to look at is vBulletin - its not free but a bit more powerfuland I really think forum will kick in on this page
its a lot to talk and share if its user friendly (unlike most of the main photo web sites; including dpreview)so yeh good luck

Hello... it would be useful to be able to Edit/Delete a post. On the NR "For Sale" page I need to delete eBay listing links for my 500mm Nikkor-reflex which sold last night for £430/$645, and my 85mm f/1.4 which went for £396/$595.
If the Admin sees this post perhaps he can do it?
TIA - Ed Buziak.
