I am looking for a wide angle lens for my new camera and decided to try out the 12-24 I own.

From about 18mm you get no vignetting.

I read about adding a 1.4TC to your DX lens to avoid vignetting and decided to give it a try.

I own a Kenko pro 300 TC that works on all the lenses I own and carefully tried it out with my 12-24 on my D800E

I get a 17.3-34.6mm lens from the 12-24 with the TC. The advantage is I do not have to worry about spinning too wide and getting serious vignetting.

I have posted shots with and without the TC from 12-24mm (not every focal length in the middle) and am thinking for my vacation this week I can use what I have.

If you are curious what 12mm on the nikon 12-24 looks like on FF and want to see where the vignetting stops as well as what a 1.4TC does to the photos, here is the link to my Flickr account.

These were all shot JPEG large fine without any corrections in LR. I did pull them into LR to look and was surprised it did not show a 12-24 option but chose 14-24 for the lens profile. It also chose 14-24 on the photos with the TC attached. I have the most current version of LR4, so not sure why the Nikon 12-24 did not show as an option.

Why on earth would you use a TC on wide angle lens? To me that just defeats the purpose of owning such a lens. To avoid any vignetting, just put your D800e into the DX mode and that will take care of it. Lastly, if you really want to take advantage of your sensor, put the 14-24 2.8 and see for yourself.

Well .... without the TC it is 18mm before vignetting starts to show .. with the TC it is about 17mm with no vignetting ... wanted to see how it worked mainly and thought to share.

Why would I shoot a 36MP camera in DX mode and only get 15.? MP if I can shoot it with or without the TC and use all 36 ?

I have been looking at wide angle lenses. Considering I just spent $3300 on the camera body I am not ready to spend 2000$ on a 14-24 or $1400 on a 16-35, especially since I am going on vacation next week.

I am going back and forth on wide angle lenses since I really dont shoot anything that I need 14 or 16mm for at this time ... so no rush. A 24-70 would be a better fit for me for my next lens purchase.

The lens probably would not even arrive in time, so I am testing out what I have in my hand and thought to share how it worked.

For kicks I just tried it on my kit 18-135 lens with the Kenko Pro 300.

It works ..almost no vignetting (i THINK i see some) at the 18mm setting.

I am going to check out how the sharpness looks. This might be a fun focal length to carry.. effectively ~25-190mm lens ... as long as the light is good.

Until I purchase additional lenses for my FF, these look like they offer me choices for now.

I totally agree with the 24-70 2.8. It will become one of your most used lens.

one other thing that is a problem is that you lose about a stop or so of light.. just better off shooting in dx mode.

thanks golfs i am looking hard at it for Christmas

starr .. i more or less disagree, i dont shoot at max aperture on every lens for every shot. i am not saying this is my plan, i am saying it is possible and posted my results for the 12-24 then tried the kit 18-135 for fun

I admit the idea of a 25-190 walk around lens is appealing. IQ would be the big concern to me, not aperture setting (within reason). the downside is f5-f8 on the 18-135.

i have other FF lenses to use for my trip, but will take the 12-24 since i dont have a wide angle.
