Here's an interesting video of two photographers at last years Super Bowl standing near each other. One is a veteran pro and the other is an "amateur". Guess who captures the winning Sports Illustrated cover shot. Hint, it was the Nikon user :^)

"anyone with a point and shoot and anyone with auto focus could've taken those pictures", lol.
Well being there for the shot makes the biggest difference, so pretty much sports photography is all about luck.

Yes luck has something to do with it but an experienced photographer knows what to look for and can anticipate where and how to capture the moment. Or rather he should know. Notice that the photographer who got the shot wasn't the one shooting at full frames per second hoping and praying to get THE shot. The "winning" photographer knew the moment was coming and had his eye in the viewfinder just as the moment was happening.
And he had a Nikon. Another reason why Canons are just good photo making machines but Nikons are an extension to the body and vision...
