D90 Successor or D300s Successor?

Hello, Guys

This probably has been asked multiple times before(not necessary here), if that is the case, please kindly provide me a link to follow-up.

I am planning update my d60 and I know D90 successor is coming this year. I saw the 2010 prediction on Thom Hogan blog, he said 2011 will be a big year for nikon (d400 and d4 as he predicted). It could be right however I saw this post from NR that D4 is field testing during big games. So here got my questions:

Is it possible D4 and/or D400 been release in 2010? If not, should I wait for D400 next year or just update to d90 successor when it is out?

Please give some suggestion.

Depends on what you like to photograph. In what ways do you feel that the D60 is letting you down or limiting your abilities?

If you are into wildlife, sports or other action related activities both the D90 and D300s currently available are fine, although we would hope for improved high ISO capabilities on the new models. If you are always waiting for the next new thing you could miss a lot of good shots.

If D60 has better focusing system, and faster continuous shooting rate, I probably will be fine. Another fact is my hands are big (this might also count well).

There is no certain field of photographing for me. I am amateur photographer and I am not always waiting for the next released one. It is just this time of the year. If there will be some ground breaking stuff coming with d400 (or d300s successor), then I would prefer to wait for it otherwise D90 successor will be good I think.

There is no way for anyone here to know what the D4 or D400 will look like, it is far to soon to even have any hints. Its likely we'll see more resolution (14MP), and improved high ISO, but even that is just speculation. I doubt we'll see either this year, since the D300s and D3s are not even a year old yet.

A D90 successor is possible, but they might just put out a D90s, as a stop gap measure until after the D4 and D400 are release with the next generation technology.

These are the latest rumored specs for the D300S and D90 replacements.

D400
• Replaces D300S.
• Announcement in 1st half of 2011.
• 16MP or higher* CMOS sensor (same new sensor as upcoming Sony A700 replacement).
• AF motor still there.
• 8 FPS (without the grip).
• Live View & special* high quality 1080 video (possibly RAW video???!!!).
• Articulated* 920K LCD.
• OVF & AF module same as D300S."

D7000
• Replaces D90/D5000.
• Announcement in Jan/Feb 2010.
• 14MP* CMOS sensor (similar to Sony A550 sensor).
• AF motor.
• New* AF module: CAM2000, 20 area.
• 5 FPS.
• Live View & 1080* video.
• Articulated 920K LCD.
• OVF same as D90.
• Weight and size below D90 "thanks" to the removal of the AF motor.

I've also heard of a D95 replacing the D90. The AF motor will still be present in the D90 replacement. That was "confirmed" by Nikon's head of R&D labs in a recent interview.

The maintain AF motor for D90 successor is really a good new for me. That is also another reason I would like to upgrade my d60.

Upgrading from a D60 will make you happy regardless which path you take.

That is for sure. But different path corresponds to different waiting interval and money amount.

That is true and only you can decide what is right for you in that regard. I too would love to have the D300s replacement but I'm in no really hurry as I have a D90 and D300. At least with a D60 you are able to shoot today and make good pictures until you decide.

If there is upgrade of the D90. What kind of price do you think we will be looking at? and how much does that change the price of the D90 when a replacement comes on the market? I was about to go out and purchase the D90...thinking I should maybe wait...hmmm

Honestly 8ella8 it doesn't look as if the D90 replacement will happen this month. The D90 hasn't been discontinued yet. The replacement will be more expensive then the current D90 price. It will be at least $1000USD and maybe as high as $1200USD depending on the features it has. The D90 was $1000 when it was first announced in summer 2008.

There seems to be a chance that another announcement from Nikon will happen this week and if it does it is more likely they will only announce new lenses and not a new DSLR. However it is not certain what will be announced "in a few days" so we are all waiting. If no D90 replacement is announced this month then March or April are the next possible announcement dates. But for sure by this summer 2010 a D90 replacement will show up.

for all of You who wait for another release to buy Your first camera, don't hesitate as the features they will bring will not improve Your skills more than just going out and starting shooting. as it was written here and there many times, there is no good time to buy a camera and lens, You either serve as a lab rat or buy stuff that will be replaced (sooner or later)

Ditto what PB PM and Adam said. I was a little scared to go from a D300 to a D90 (not by choice), and I have been completely satisfied with my D90. I think there is only a small group of photographers that would find anything lacking in what it can do. And, like Niko said, it's a great value now because it has competition and there's a chance of it getting replaced. $800 for the D90's features is a bargain.

Adamz has a point. However I will add, if you need a camera now, don't wait, you will miss many shooting opportunities. If you have a camera and are looking for an upgrade, then that's up to you so long as you can shoot today.

I went to the D300s from D60 and am SO thankful I was "forced" to upgrade when I scratched my D60 focusing screen. Oops. (Swear all I used was the brush and whoosh-scratch!)

I have been drooling for a year following every possible D700 upgrade concept. Was my plan--still want FX, but now am looking at glass (24-70mm awesome!)

Like others said--you will miss out if all you ever do is wonder about "what is next!"

Almost waited too long and have got tremendous images even with crummy weather!

A friend told me he saw some pro using a D90s at a class reunion in Williamstown, MA 2 weeks ago. I had just told him that Nikon has no 1080 i HD DSLR's and he told me that this other pro was using what looked like a D90S logo and was told it was new and shot 1080i HD.
I told him it had to be a prototype as they list no9 such camera.
Recently with the price drop on the D90, I believe he has to be right.No other Nikon has been lowered so drastically lately.
I would have expected the D300 to go the wayside first if 1080i was coming into play. Too bad Nikon is not making an affordable 14 0r 18 megapixel DSL:R before 1080i.
After all it is mainly for still photography and Nikon is behind the 8 ball.

My friend's mom use to date the pro your friend saw and according to her the camera was just a D70S :^)

1080i is equivalent to 720p, no?

No, 1080i means it's 1080x1920 but each frame only has info from half the vertical (1080/2=540) lines. Okay, that's not technically true but it's a simple way to think about it. 720p means you have complete 720x1280 frames every frame.
