Ooh astro that is prefect! I love the feather detail here and this species isn't easy to get such clear shots of.
Some might say it's too centered or maybe you should clone out the dark line near the bottom. Basically, considering what it often takes to get a good shot of this species, I will say that even the professional bird guides that contain photos of this species usually don't show them this well. Your bird is a male by the way.
Great job.

Thanks Gentoo. I was lucky to get ~50 feet away. It's hard to appreciate how small a Kestrel is.
I've been reviewing my BIF pics, so this month I plan to post one a day.

Astro, excellent shot! I have a question, what part of the world are you in? If this was in the US than this would be a White-Tailed Kite.

Great shot in a tricky exposure situation, astrophotographer. I love the kestrel shot, as well.
Gentoo, beautiful subject isolation on the woodpecker.

This is the third time I've gone back to ID this bird. BTW, I know it's a male as it's partner was nearby. I have some shots that are not suitable for any young kites to see. ;-)

For a brief period in the 80's the Black-Shouldered Kite of the old world and the new world White-Tailed Kite were lumped as a single species. They are very very similar although the White-Tailed is a bit larger. Also look out for the Green/Striated Heron mess they've created.
What led you to believe its a male?
Oh and thank you Jonnyapple

ah, so you know the larger one was the female. Lot's of people don't realize that with birds of prey.

Remember when I said I'd have more of this species? I really like how most of them came out:

aesnakes, if on the west coast of North America, they're Black Oystercatchers. If in Europe, they're Sooty Oystercatchers.
