    The 28-80 is a little on the slow side but it fine as a walk around lens and if something is really off the wall but you don't have time to switch primes or move much this lens will get the lens job done I find. I use it for about 5-10% of my shots only. I have been pleased. Its not easy finding a better lens cheaper. The 1.8 D is a pro quality lens and very cheap as mentioned.

    Actually, I'm pretty sure you can mount any lens on your D40 with no worries at all, including pre-AI lenses. At least, that's the case for my D60 from what I've heard. I'd look into it first, to be sure, though.

    You can mount any F mount lens on a D40, D60 or D5000.

    yes you just lose auto focus.

    I may just get just in case I go FX though. Haha.

    Plus there's the FM2.

    It Was his D300 and he broke his aperture meter coupling and your camera does not have any, Anyway here is a lens compatibility chart form our body Ken

    Ahhh yes our good buddy Ken. I used to like his posts about a year ago but he got a little too "out there for me." Some of his reviews are still good though..
