Well, was over at National Camera in Minneapolis and they were telling me that in the past 2 weeks, the supply of D700's has been very tight. They were completely out of D700's, but had plenty o' D300s's and D3s's. Very interesting.

We can only hope, right? I think NR admin is being pretty pessimistic about the announcement(s) next week. I'll be really surprised if it's only coolpixes and lenses. Welcome to the forum and thanks for the tip!

The D700 isn't officially discontinued as was the D300 a few months before the D300S came out. So if Nikon does announce a new DSLR it is NOT going to be a D700 replacement but an additional new model. Just as the D40X wasn't meant to replace the D40.
Hmm. . .so Niko, you think it'll be a D900 that is a derivative of the D3x in a D700 body?
That wouldn't excite me as much, would be too $$$$. . . .
Was hoping for an updated D700 like a D700s with D3s sensor/video/extras. . .well, 48 more hours!!
D700 is a nice camera and you could get a very good deal on it recently hence there is a supply shortages now.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the new FX lenses to be announced soon. The 16-35 and prime 24mm? Maybe demand for a cheaper FX body grew? I might be reaching here though I know :)
An affordable full frame body has been a rumor for the past few months. But I don't think it'll happen now.
