CIPA (Camera and Imaging Products Association) has released it's analysis of 2009 camera sales. Here are the results:
Point & shoot = 96 million cameras sold
DSLR/ EVIL = 9.9 million cameras sold
Lenses = 16 million sold
The DSLR figures include EVIL cameras like the Olympus E-P series and Panasonic GH/F series. These figures pretty much prove that point & shoot cameras are the back bone and foundation that keep Nikon or any other camera company going.
So lots of DSLR owners only have one lens

Most of those I know with D40, D60, D3000 and D5000's have only the kit lens. Maybe that explains the 85/3.5. Manufacturers need the volumes P&S's provide to drive down component costs.
Nikon DSLR plus lenses may have less units sold but income rivals that of P&S.
And if you consider that profit is much higher in DSLR and lenses i am not sure that it is not the other way around and that money earned in DSLR market are not spent for developing new crappy Coolpixes.
