The price of the D300S replacement (D400?) has to come down! When will we get a metal bodied Nikon at this price range?!
That's impressive at that price. I guess I'll believe it when I see it.
The 50D has been at that price for sometime now. I think it will happen.
What am I doing shooting nikon? I bet my camera wouldn't even survive a drop from a plane! Oh wait, I've tried the 30D and can't stand the interface. But maybe I'm just used to Nikon.
I would love to have a metal bodied Nikon with a swivel screen for that price though jonny. Imagine if Nikon lowers the price of the D300S to $1,200USD in order to compete!
I'd be very happy with a D300s price drop. For my purposes it's a perfect addition to my D90. Ranter than more MPs, I'd prefer another stop or two of ISO performance.

Yup hearty - even more, according to DxO labs d90 is even little let noisy. I would go for d300s for $1200.
The D90 has less noise because even with NR turned off NR is still applied, one of the reasons I sold my D90 for a D300.

I mean, they always price those bodies at $1700 MSRP. . .I'll admit, I'd pay $600 more for a Nikon because I feel they are $600 BETTER, but that's another story. . .
D300 was D40 competitor, and a very successful one, at the time. In the meanwhile Canon gave us 50D, 7D and we now expect new 60D but we Nikon users are still stuck with D300s.
Nikon will probably be able to produce a camera with a Sony latest and greatest 14Mpix APS-C in a six months or so, no sooner then a year after Sony because of the strings attached to the agreement they made with Sony, and according to performance this sensor gives it would not be anything stunning.
There are many things I don’t know but it seams to me that Nikon will continue to loose market if they stick to Sony for sensors.

Haha, when you say D40 I thought Nikon automatically, not Canon. Damn, that shows how long I've been interested in photography- not too long. :D

Actually, I don't think Nikon will do worse if they stick with Sony. They certainly know how to fix their sensors, and as long as they can still get spectacular results, I highly doubt they'll lose any market share.
Don't fix it if it ain't broken!
They have already lost the market share, as much as 20% in 2009, so it is not the question of if they will loose it but what they will do to stop this trend.
How is falling from 40% to 30%, 20% loss of market share?
40:30=100:75 so, if your numbers are correct, it is actually 25% loss of market share for Nikon.
Not sure if I understand you mb. Are you saying Nikon is losing share because they use Sony sensors or because they don't offer full HD video?
I am sure there are some people at Nikon asking them selves this same question ;)
But, to make myself more clear, yes I think Nikon should find a way to offer newer and better sensors sooner on the market.
And it seams too me that Nikon is being late in everything lately, more powerful DSLRs, they are too late to introduce own EVIL ...
They don't have a lot of options. Kodak is the only other major sensor developer they could realistically hope work with. Problem with Kodak is, their sensors tend to be very expensive.
As for EVIL, Canon (you know, the biggest Camera manufacture in the world) also lacks them, sales are going just fine for them.
Unless you own a D2H(S), D3, D3S, or D700 than your Sony sensored Nikon has done just fine for you! I don't recall anyone starting a post on how crappy the Sony sensor on the D90 is.

I'm surprised I haven't heard anyone with Sony DSLRs saying "FIRE all of the Sony sensor engineers, we want Nikon's engineers PRONTO!"
We truly are blessed by Nikon's engineering. :D
Maybe they're just too cheap to pay for the prices Nikon asks for their DSLRs.
There are more things that are wrong with Sony's DSLRs than just noisy sensors!
There was Fuji? and speaking of the original post the iso on the 60D will probably suck as much as the Mark IV so im not too worried
