welcome to the forum surrati
sure You can use it as a portrait lens, as for the distance I would expect around 10m, but need to check it - on DX body 105 will give You 157 mm

I find the 105/2.8 macro a little too long for portraits on a DX body. When I used to shoot portraits with 35mm film, I used 85/2 and 105/2.5 90% of the time with a 50/2 for the remainder.
I don't believe Nikon makes a really great DX portrait lens at this time. The 60mm macro is the right focal length, but f2.8 is just too slow at this length for a portrait lens. What I'd like is something from 60-70mm and f2 or faster. Perhaps the Tamron 60/2 might work.
If you're shooting FX, get the 105. It's a great lens.

There's an 85mm DX micro, but I'm not sure if the f3.5 is going to be useful or not for subject isolation.

I've got mixed feeling about the 85mm F3.5, it is an appealing focal length for DX, but F3.5 may be too much depth of field for portraits.

I plan to get this lens also, and I think 105mm is a nice working focal length compare to 60mm. That if u really want to go for insect micro. Just my opinion and did the lens performance degraded when adding a tele-converter? Thanks for the info.
