With all the waterproof compact cameras hitting the market, how long before we see a digital version of the Nikonos Line?
Can you imagine a waterproof D3s with all that high ISO capeability. Now that's something that would get me intrested in High Def Video in a DSLR.

I think it would be super expensive. Nikon would need to redo/update the entire Nikonos lens range too. It's cheaper to just buy a really good (though still very expensive) case and use all the lenses you all ready have.
How about EVIL thingy with D3s sensor? That could be cheaper huh?

Yes an "EVIL thingy with D3S sensor" would still be cheaper than a fully watertight tank like Nikonos thingy with a D3S sensor. You are correct. An "EVIL thingy" doesn't need fully watertight tank like lenses to operate.
I don't care how expensive it is! Nikon just needs to make a Nikonos DSLR!
But honestly; can you really trust underwater housing? It freaks me out. I'm afraid there's just no way anyone can convince me to put my only DSLR underwater. Nah-ah. No way. I spent way too much to risk it, you know?
The last Nikonos was the RS which was discontinued around 1995 or 1996. They were very heavy and bulky but super solid. As I remember the biggest user was the US Navy. In fact I think the Nikonos RS was built specifically for a Naval contract? Does anyone remember that?
It didn't sell very well because of the high price. A digital version would probably fall above the D3X price range! Without a lens! Each lens would probably be pretty pricey too :^(
I think we'll see a smaller cheaper Nikonos V like digital EVIL version.
I had thought that the next Nikonos would probably be some sort of EVIL camera, but I would sincerely like to see a proper SLR. I love the idea of the Nikonos RS. It's one of my fantasy cameras.
Has anyone seen an underwater housing that could accomodate the 14-24 f2.8? It seems like that would be the lens to use. Underwater, everything get magnified before it makes it to your lens, so you want something wide that will allow you to get close enough that there isn't to much water between you and your subject.
My girlfriend did an underwater mermaid shoot in a pool. The shots done with her 11-16mm were much better than the shots with the 24-70. It was pretty cool stuff.
TJ I think Nikon would make a lot of money if they offered a waterproof EVIL camera like the Olympus and Casio point & shoots. The LCD would have to be very big and bright with a large angle-of-view.

Todays pro underwater housings offer so much versatility that I think a digital Nikonos would have a hard time competing against them.
Either they do it right like the old Nikonos with the changeable lenses or they make a really nice point and shoot that's waterproof and shock proof.

Why do you think that? Or we are being to serous now?
No I really think that compact live view approach would be better, cheaper and easier to implement and sealed for underwater photography than DSLR design. And I also think that, If Nikon must develop new sealed lenses for an underwater use, why not make new and more useful EVIL system in the process.
I doubt however that any of it will happen as the costs would be too high and it is always cheaper to developed waterproof exoskeleton housing than the whole new system and even more so for an EVIL thingy, OK?
