I have newer used higher than 3200 ISO, and there have been times when max 6400 would have been better, one of these days I will try to shot 6400 ISO

Do you have any Photographic Phobias

Yep, the same one you have bmxdad. 3200 is the highest I've ever used and if I can I do my best to keep it lower than that.

One thing for me is that even though I have a weather sealed D300, I'm paranoid whenever there is any moister in the air even though I've heard of people shooting with it in light rain. No way I would do that and I don't know how my lenses would handle it.

You look downright adventurous compared to me, Pete and gentoo. ISO 1600 is pushing my boundaries on the D90/D300.

    I fear direct sunlight.

edit: here's a shot illustrating when I get into trouble with ISO fears. Why was I shooting at ISO 200? I actually think it works for this shot because you can see the rain, but you get the idea. I guess it's more like ISO 800 because I had to boost the exposure by two stops in lightroom. By the way, gentoo, both cameras survived just fine with about 45 minutes in the drizzle (we each had a D300).

When doing a street photography, I hate when there are kids. God forbid one of the mother see me with a camera anywhere near the kids. And accuses me of shooting their kids. Next thing will be how I am a sexual predator and other crap.

That's why I never shoot any kids while doing street.

I photograph kids anyway, what are their parents going to do, sue you? I've never encountered any problems, but I always carry a pack of little cards with my name, email and flickr on it in case someone wants to get in touch with me about getting a print or a scan of the negative. People are vain.

Phobia? Pouring the fixer into the dev tank first, instead of the developer. Or chemistry suddenly expiring on me and ruining a roll.

    Ha, you guys are wimps!

I've used my D300 up to ISO6400 from the beginning! If I need it, I use it. I don't care how bad it may look, in the end it's about getting the shot. Nothing's stopping me! 8^D

And what's a little weather going to do? Remember that White-Throated Sparrow you identified for me Gentoo? I took that photo during snowfall without covering my D300 or anything. You should have seen it; the entire top of the camera and lens was covered in snow! Teehee, I didn't bother to clean it up, I just left the camera alone to get rid of the water on its own. And hmmm...*click*...still working :^D

And there's my photo with a flower in the rain, where my D300 was not protected at all. And there's been countless other times where it's been splashed or snowballed (naughty little brother ;^) ) and I've never experienced any problems. I used to be paranoid to but I let go after a while—glad I did to!

The last thing you want to do is make limits for yourself.

I use my D300 to it's full potential, whether that's ignoring the weather or using ISO6400 or putting Pre-Ai lenses on it (OK, that was a bad idea and I didn't know, but still). So don't be wimps :^P

Oh tell me about it. Trying being a birder at a local lake with a nice big telephoto!

When shooting long exposures and urban shots at night, sometimes the area can get rather shady. Dealing with undesirables at night can be a pain in the ass.

While walking around with a few thousand dollars of gear, I always make sure I have my bear / pepper spray attached to my camera bag.

    Ya never know...

Good points alpha. When I was in Oakland recently I did shoot in light rain for a bit. I stopped because I have no idea how my new lens would hold up in the rain.

Regulator that's good advice. However I wouldn't even try that in San Francisco at night. That city is crazy at night.

You see, that's a great picture! Don't let a little rain stop you! And trust me, your lens will hold up fine as well. I used to use cheap, crappy, consumer (55-200mm) Sigma lenses in the rain, and water would get on the interior part of the zoom extension, and they're still working fine. I think. Now your lens is a pro NIKKOR, with like no exterior moving parts. What could go wrong? :^D

In film days I also had this fear of Airport x rays going to ruin my Fuji Provia Slide film. And I had many arguments with people operating these x rays machine about letting my slide film getting checked by hand, they were in a plastic bag. Most of the time I lost the argument and my film got scanned

I actually newer saw any damage even on a trip when my film was scanned 6 times, but I still kept asking to not have them scanned

Today this would properly not be a smart way of going through the Airport Security

With the D40, I try not to go over 800, but that really hasn't been an issue now that I have the 35mm 1.8. If I must though, I will go to 1600.

I'm with you bmxdad, x-ray machines and my film were a big phobia. I have no ISO phobias, I just don't use anything above 800 (like NSXType-R). I have always had a phobia when changing lenses that I'm going to drop one.

My fear is getting all my gear stole while being occupied at a photo shoot or in transport :^( That and being robbed in some of the crime-prone areas I some times shoot in.

I don't like shooting strangers, which is why I don't do street photography.

alphanikonrex: you are a brave man with your D300. I've heard too many horror stories of water getting into the top LCD and causing camera malfunctions to go out in the rain. Of course when it rains here in Vancouver (Canada) it comes down hard! I made a rain cover out of some plastic bags since my 300mm F4 AF-S is not weather sealed (No idea why a lens that expensive isn't).

Not just rain PB PM but condensation from going into a cold environment and then into a warm one. That can be worst than rain because you don't realize it's happening until your camera is all wet.

I thought your Phobia Niko would be, seeing me walking up to your front door. Maybe I shouldn't there are a few to many gun owners in Texas, but you would only shot me with your D70 right

I don't fear rain in the same way I fear salt spray at the beach. Anyone use the Aqua Tech D2 sports cover? Not cheap, but it looks quite effective for those not as cavalier as our Alpha one.

No, no Pete you misunderstood me. I said I'd only shoot you in the back! :^)

*As Bmxdad buzzes the doorbell to Niko's lair. Niko reaches down and takes the safety off the HK 45 ACP holstered under his desk before pushing a button to release the magnetic lock on the door.*

Nah, first I let you unlock the trunk of your rental car and show me the gold bullion, and the pelican case with the D800 and D4 you brought me from Canada. Then I pop a cap behind your ear :^)

Yes we Canadians are suckers for showing of our latest toys, but that D4 is a real beauty, I don't really blame you for wanting it

Nope, I'm just an irresponsible kid :^) Sometimes being immature will get you the shot I guess. Did I tell you about the time when my camera and I got dribbled on by a basketball? The picture was pretty cool though :^)

LOL Pete, I'll watch your back with my own set of weaponry :^)
