HA HA finally someone else comes up with a funny thread title :^)
They forgot to mention that the AF of an EVIL camera doesn't come anywhere near the speed of a DSLR! At least not yet!
Johnny "using an interval timer just doesn't cut it anymore." if I can think of one I'll throw a moonraker reference in and well see if we can transition it to a physics post.
Was I the only one who thought the better investment: lenses or bodies thread was to discuss keratotomy vs cosmetic surgery?
No thanks on the physics offer. It's the weekend.
Edit: ps, I was dissing on Niko because he thought his titles are as good as this one.
Lol Johnny. I had to look up keratotomy of course, but lol none the less.

Hey I stopped trying to be funny with my thread titles because Monty11 said threads should be titled appropriately otherwise he won't ready them :^)
I really do agree with the WIRED article though. The mirror in DSLRs is starting to look like VHS tapes did when DVDs came out.

Oh no, oh no, oh no...
Dang it, here come's some more technology to mess up our perfectly good DSLRs! You've got to be kidding me! If they do this to me then I'll...I'll...I'll...well, I'll think of something...
Blast it all, I'm feeling particularly Alphish today :^(
Don't worry about it, alpha. They can't force you to get rid of your mirror. It will probably only show up on specialist cameras at first, anyway. I could see it changing sports shooting, for example, since I think the mirror is the bottleneck for frame rate. They would probably still pander to the anti-EVF crowd for a while.
Yes, they'll probably first test it out on a D90-type camera, but if it's overly successful I'm sure it'll end up in soon in the flagships. Just like movie mode. When the D3S came out with D-movie I was heartbroken :^(
I know it's necessary for some things. I just can't stand it. An optical viewfinder will always be better than a digital one the same way film will always be better than digital.
The stuff that film can't do is the stuff that an OV can't do.
And the thing I really don't understand is why they're trying to speed things up when the AF/AE module in the D3S can't even keep up with the insane framerates! How're they going to work it out with an EV???
His name is "Jaws" and he kills people!

I like you and your dogmas, alpha.
I was quite serious when I wrote those things!
I absolutely HATE D-Movie! I knew it was coming in the D3S, but I simply could not believe it. My beautiful, beautiful, flagship camera, scarred with a non-photography-related feature! Despicable. *Sob* :^(
Same goes for the optical viewfinder. How does digital compare to film? Better low-light capabilities—same goes for the electronic viewfinder. More cost effective? Check. More portable? Check. Speed? Check. But where does the ultimate quality lie? In film. Just like it will remain in the optical viewfinder.
I like you and your dogmas, alpha. (I prefer optical viewfinders as well...for now.)
Optical viewfinders are great as long as your eye is getting the job done for you. They are complete crap for shooting in the dark though.
Just like film :^)
Just like I said elsewhere, I require a proper viewfinder in my camera. I can't look at a stupid screen and try and focus a lens at the same time. Dumb and clumsy — and believe me, I've tried it before. I can guarantee it's one of the most uncomfortable experiences in photography you'll ever have. I won't buy into this EVIL crap.
One more thing, I don't know about anyone else — maybe I'm crazy — but size matters. It's like me with my D40. Yeah, I'm rockin' the DSLR with the battery grip and my 70-300mm, but it sure as hell isn't anything like having a D3S or D700 or something. No one will take you seriously with these foolish, dinky cameras!
Oh — and Alpha, you don't need to use D-Movie if you don't want to, you know. It's just a side feature. It's not like it affects the rest of the camera. Nikon's adding it to all of their cameras to keep up with the Jones'.

Well, many times I've been asked to take a video with my camera. Up to today I'm relieved I can say no simply because I CAN'T. In the future I'll have to resort to lying or...
I don't mind video at all I think. I WILL use it in the future when I need it. I think I just didn't want it in the flagships, I wanted them to be more "no-nonsense" if you know what I mean.

Finally, somebody who agrees with me!
It amuses me that they're pouring all this money into electronic viewfinders when traditional rangefinders are so much better. I understand the desire to get rid of the mirror in cameras (as much as I disapprove of it, that is), but honestly, I really don't understand how an electronic viewfinder is supposed to do us any good.
If I ever see the day where electronic viewfinders rule the photographic world, I'm getting an old Graflex and living in a cave for the rest of my days.
EVF provide overlays directly onto the field of view. It's like having a heads-up-display from a fighter jet or video game. I like having things such as the histogram overlayed on a scene so that I can make adjustments without having to look away from the viewfinder and at a dial or button.
You can also adjust brightness or magnify. You can't do that with an optical viewfinder unless you get brighter more expensive lenses. The resolution and frame rate of future EVF's is impressive and rivals OVFs. Think of it as having a mini HD tv inside your viewfinder!
Analog Chris I think you born 40years too late, lol :^)
I don't understand the hostility to EVF. Or the idea that one type of viewfinder better. Each has strength and weaknesses. The SLR gives a what-you-see-is-what-you-get view, no matter what the lens. The downside is lens designs constrained by the mirror and the prism makes for a larger camera. It mostly, but not entirely replaced rangefinders because of the advantages. Rangefinders are smaller and have a bright viewfinder. The downside is a limit on focal lengths and maybe parallax.
To me EVIL is a compromise between them. You get WYSIWYG but at a lower resolution (at least for now). And the compactness of a rangefinder. Also, some flexibility. I can see a picture in picture magnification for precision focusing. That would be worth it.
There have been times I've left the D300 at home because of size. yet the current crop of P&S at too limited. If the price on a small, pocketable EVIL was reasonable I buy one.

Hint- you don't have to use Movie mode if you don't want to!

You have a grip for the D40? I'm sort of interested, but I can't justify the purchase. I don't have massive lenses yet.
And as much as I want a small camera, they're still too expensive.
I'd rather have an advanced compact like the Canon S90 than travel with a whole bunch of lenses.
If you're going to go stealthy, why would you want to carry a bag full of lenses?
I agree astrophotographer. Also if rangefinders are so great than why did they virtually become extinct until recently when Leica marketing desperately convinced everyone and their mother that rangefinders are the way to go?

Um, you can STILL say no even if your camera has video, DUH.
Why don't you sell all your digital cameras and only shoot film? Or better yet sell your film cameras too and just make your own pinhole camera out of a can of Campbell's chicken soup? Then you won't have to worry about any of this technology nonsense.
