As today, Everything is about big and good and better and...a lot of $$$$ together with a lot of weight...
Is it only me that wants a light body FX? Why don't we get an FE body style with FX sensor? That would be swell, no?
Just want to know if it is only me...

Well in order to be as "thin" as a film camera a digital version of the FE would have to lose the reflex mirror. The Samsung NX10 is very "thin" and feels very much like a traditional film DSLR. If you want to have the mirror and still have a thin body then you have to have some amazingly small electrical components. Perhaps in a few more years everything will fit nice and neatly within the space of a traditional 35mm film camera body.
I personally prefer the ergonomics of todays "thicker" Nikons versus the thin and hard to hold bodies of the past.

I agree Djonah. I would also prefer to limit the feature set to achieve reduced size and weight. If Leica can put a full frame sensor in the M9, increasing sensor size without a massive increase in size and weight should be an attainable goal. An SLR can never be the same size as a rangefinder, but it does not have to be massive either. I don't see thinness as a particular issue, just overall bulk. I would expect the electronics to diminish in size, bulk and power consumption with each new generation of chip technology, everything else being equal (or kept equal) the cameras should get smaller.
The M9 doesn't have a big empty space for the mirror to flop up and down so there's more room for the electronics.
I agree Niko, but at one time no one thought Leica could put a full frame sensor in an M body. If you compare the first "brick-size" cell phones with the current phones, you can see the possible integration of electronics. Yes, certain mechanical parts can never be reduced beyond a point - pentaprism and mirror box being the most obvious, but much of the rest can be made smaller.
But a FX DSLR could still be build smaller, with a size in the D90 area

I know I'd like this. Maybe the addition of an AMOLED display would reduce the thickness a bit as they don't require a back light.
Oooh. There's a tough one for you. Would you be willing to shoot with a DSLR that had no display at all? After all, the film people do it.

Yeah if it has no LCD at all then what's the point? I'd rather use film. I really think cameras like the NX10 are the future. EVF's will eventually match optical viewfinders. It's just a matter of time. Remember that digital DSLR photography is barely 10 years old. Look at all the advancements since the first Nikon D1.
The reflex mirror is such a limiting factor now(size wise, video wise, and fps). Getting rid of it entirely seems like such a logical evolution in future designs.
Nikon F mount has focal plane distance of 46.5 mm so that is that, add at least 15 mm to it for sensor, motherboard and LCD and 60-65 mm is a minimum depth Nikon can build a DSLR.
I was in love with Nikon FE at the time but I really like the ergonomics of a thick handle newer models have.
To make something smaller Nikon must change the mount and the principals of camera, for example they could opt for sideways moving mirror and a second higher sensitivity and lower resolution sensor for live preview and video, this will allow them to make new mount much closer to sensor plane.

I'll be an early adopter. I think it's got huge potential benefits, especially if they ever open up the hardware for 3rd party open source firmware. You give smart people some gadgets and a way to interface with them and it's amazing what they come up with.
I prefer the thicker bodies, too, MB and Niko.
As much as I like the style of the FE/FM bodies, for practical, day long usage, they are far less comfortable to use than modern DSLRs. Would I like a full frame camera with a similar build and weight, you bet, but it would be a backup camera.
I certainly don't want such a combination. Let's keep FE to film and modern design to dslr cameras.
We'd better abandon current DSLR bodies then, since the basic designs can be linked back on film camera bodies from the late 90s.
Current Nikon DSLR design is based on Italian Giorgetto Giugiaro's design of the F5. Which came out in 1996. For a film camera it was already pretty bulky.
Here's a video preview of the NX10 just to give you guys a sense of how small and compact this "DSLR" is. I like the menu interface.
I've always liked something like that. Issue is, I don't want it to be obsolete, so it better have interchangeable parts as well- sensor, prism, etc.
Imagine (thinking about small and stuff) that the nikon EVIL would be a cam that is able to use
1 special lenses desingd for the camera (like the 4/3 lens line-up of panasonic and others)
2 nikon F lenses with the use of an adapter
3 use the leica lenses with the use of an other adapter...wouldn't that be a swell nikon DFE :D

You have just described Panasonic micro 4/3 camera available in your nearest photo shop.
4/3s cameras kind of bug me, yes I have an Olympus E-410 for taking to work or just to throw over my shoulder when I'm not doing anything serious, but there is something about them that bugs me. It could be that the E-410 doesn't have the image ratio selection choice, but I don't like the square frame of the images, I like the 3:2 of the APS-C. Sure you can crop your 4/3s images to 3:2, but why should I have to lose resolution to do that? That is why the mirco 4/3s cameras don't appeal to me. The NX10, far more appealing, but since I could get a D5000 or other real SLR for the price, no thanks.
