I finally caved in and bought a new V1, to go with the NEX-C3 and NEX-5N, With the 300mm F4 af-s on it it is a blast to use for shooting small birds and not nearly as heavy as my 500mm lenses. The type of noise does not bother me, and the combination is incredibly sharp. I needed this camera like a hole in the head, but having a ball with it so more than worth it to me. I guess the lesson to me is not to make a judgment on something you have not used before. msmoto thanks for the link in another thread to a good review. That review is what prompted me to buy a V1. Picture below"
I am sorry but the level of noise - even in this magnification - is unacceptable. I will however not fully blame the V1 for it as there seems to be quite some color enhancement/saturation applied post shooting.
I am of those who believe Nikon is really losing time with this tiny sensor size, falling way behind the NEX/PEN competition. I really would have loved to have a second decent APS-C camera NEX/PEN size for my travels from Nikon, but Nikon insists on this format which is far from serving the needs of the correct clientele.
for me this snap is more thank ok, sure there's app 15% too much colour added and a little bit too much sharpening done, though the noise reminds me some good old film times. composition is excellent, therefore it's nice too look at such picture.
I appreciate your comments. I went back to the original and re-cropped it and reduced the color so the crop is different, and also reduced the sharpening. I did push the one above very hard to see what it could take. This one has no noise reduction as well.

I have a couple of NEX camera and like them. The NEX C3 / Nex 5N. But like the V1 as a fun camera so ordered another one for a walk camera. I will probably just leave 300mm F4 on the first V1 as they seem to like each other.
@ TriShooter.... This is simply a very nice photo... well done.

Thank you msmoto !!! I put my ais 85mm f/1.4 ED on the v1 / ft-1 and shot this picture to show the depth of field while it was raining today, so hand holding it at 1/200th @ 1600 ISO with the lens wide open. This was jpg so there is more to be had from the camera. I am really enjoying this camera, and appreciate your noticing my post.

This is 10.5mm Fisheye Lens with Distortion removed on the v1/ft-1 below:

Paperman, I was walking my dog when I saw this shot so probably would have not got it with the D300/D7000 and the 500mm lens attached to get in the same ball park on focal length. Thia is the reason I like the V1. Like said before i have two NEX cameras because of the quality, and low noise so understand what you are saying but I was saying the same thing until I bought the camera. But with the NEX I would still be carrying the 500 while walking the dog so decided this has a good place in the line up for seniors like me that are getting tired of carrying big heavy lenses around pn long walks. I dropped some of the noise so you could see the bord wihout the over saturation, and dropped the sharpness.

adamz thank you for your comments on the composition of the bird picture. I was in a hurry and did hit it really hard on the saturation and the sharpness. That red is bright enough to be a Christmas light, lol, but my wife loved it. I still set up occasionally on a pond with heavier lenses, but as I get older it seems to be more about the memory of getting a good picture than the perfection of the equipment. In fact it is fun to try to do better with less for me.

The thing is you can afford to have 2 NEX's aside V1.
Nikon has obviously not intended V1 to be the 4th or 5th camera a serious photographer owns/uses. However, the V1 seems to serve either this purpose or be the choice of some cool youngsters/college students with money - looking for something a bit better than iphone for facebook uploads.
The composition is good and there is plenty of color in there. I like the shot of the rain soaked leaf which all goes to show that it's the photographer that makes the shot, but ... I'm with paperman as far as noise goes.
In the out of focus areas it sure does remind me of my old D3000 when using it's higher ISO settings.
There is potential in these cameras; maybe I'll take a close look at the iteration after next...
This shot was intentionally made on the dark side of the flower with the Nikon 10.5mm Fisheye on the FT-1, distortion removed and noise reduced, especially in the dark areas that were intentionally created by the light coming from the back side of the flower. Shot @ ISO 3200 under a flourescent light at 1/30th sec with no tweaking of color temperature which was set on auto White Balance on the V1.

The original was a jpg so it could be better. BTW this pretty little flower is on a Christmas Cactus which blooms from November - December.
For those with V2 cameras, don't update your lens firmware at all, it will corrupt.

+1 to the Nikon 1/FT-1/AF-S 300/4 combo. It is perfect for birding as long as you keep the ISO low. I just upgraded to the V2 and will post samples when I can.

ageha; nice shots! Thank you for taking the time to post them here!
There is plenty of detail in your shots, the sharpness is excellent, and the noise well controlled by your low ISO settings. Perhaps because of growing up on film shots taken as the sun came over the horizon the noise at the higher ISO settings does not seem to bother me because it almost looks like grain to me.
I almost bought another V1 several weeks ago but resisted the urge. I am still hard pressed to buy into the V2 Regaedless, they are fun cameras, and a super buy at BHPhoto's current pricing.
The more I shoot these cameras, the better I like them. The V1 is a super walk around cameras and spectacular on trips where heavier gear becomes a problem for birding. Now I travel with two NEX cameras covering the 18-300mm and two nikon V1s, one at 810mm using a 300mm F4 afs, and the other at 1350mm using a Nikon 500mm F5 lens (early 1960s) that is manual focus for birding light with a tripod; this lens works like a pro in the aperture mode with the FT-1.
I will be very interested in what you think of the V2. Even if the noise level is the same as the V1 more pixels will likely give you more ability to crop and finer details.
