Hey,
Are any of the professionals on here using the D90 for work? I haven't bought kit in a while and, as a professional, even if I'm not shooting much (I went back to college to finish my BA) I need to upgrade my kit.
I was looking at the D90 and like it.
If there are, how is it holding up to say a D2H or D3? Are you using the video mode? What do you think the pros and cons of using it as a professional?

I'm amateur user of d90 and I think it is more than enough for me. I guess it could be useful as a backup body for professional photographer or reporter who wants something lightweight. You can read some useful opinions on http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/index.htm page. Picture quality is comparable with D300, which is more serious body. However do not expect it to work like D3. That’s different league… You will not find some direct access buttons, like on more professional equipment which will allow very fast metering mode or AF mode change, you will not make 7 frames per second :) But you will be able to make beautiful pictures… It’s worth buying.
Anyway if you are professional you should already now the answer for your questions... And the video mode... Hmmm, what to say, do not even ask about it, forget about it if you are professional.
Just shot a wedding with it this last weekend. It worked great! Hopefully I'll have some of the images up on my website soon so you can see for yourself how they worked.
If you get one, I highly suggest setting the "function" button to switch the type of metering mode. It makes things a lot easier.
The video is a gimmick. It has terrible quality and has too much "wobble" on the frames. I don't use it. Don't let that discourage you though. The image quality sure is stellar.
Also, the D90 uses SDHC cards instead of CF.

Like gregory, I'm not a professional but I've heard of pros using it at least as a second body. With that said, I've ordered one for my second body as well. I've played around with ones a couple of friends of mine own. I find it to be more than adequate. It's on par with the semi pro Canon lines like the 40D. Unless you're shooting sports, I'm not so sure that most would notice that it's slower than a D300. For wildlife shooters like myself and I would imagine even for portraits it should be sufficient. The differences with the auto focus will just mean that it will take a little more skill and practice for me. Then again, I once used a D40 as well.

Thank you. I forgot that it lacks the dedicated switch for metering modes. Zachmorin, I'd love to see some of your work with the D90.
Not really sure if it's adequate, but Chase Jarvis really liked the D90.

Exactly! This is why I decided to wait a while for a D400 and get a D90 and a really good lens that I've been wanting for a long time. Once you start using pro lenses, those variable aperture, soft at extremes consumer lenses just won't cut it for you anymore.
I know few people who use D90 or D80 as second camera for wedding photography etc
but main one still d700 or d3
it all comes down to what are you looking from the camera and what is the nature of your photography etc
and define professional photographer?

Gregory, Im not concerned about 7 fps. I just want a good clean image. The D200, my current camera, is really feeling its age at anything about 320. So its time for good and affordable gear.

A professional is someone who does it for a living. I do it for a living but have had to scale my "living" back due to my studies.
The nature of the work done with the camera will be PJ images, whatever that means. From a purely technical stand point its not the size of the camera or fps or whatevs anymore. Its now about the sensor. The sensors in the D300 and D90, to me, are good enough for "professional" work; I used a D80 on Capitol Hill and had pics published. If anyone has doubts, Alex Majoli of Magnum is making amazing pictures with a Canon G9. obviously what he shoots is more "documentary" stuff and has the time to make more mistakes. I don't because my deadlines, when I shoot, are more immediate.
But I digress. I would love to hear from peeps who are using the D90 during assignments.

Hi
As of now, I get my living through photography(Press/report photography).
I changed positions, where as my old one supplied me with gear, but my new one, requires my own. I got all my lens and stuff, bur unfortunately the D3 has risen in price so making me need to postpone my purchase for a month or two(To understand the situation, the average wage here is about 500 EUR/600 USD per month).
In the meantime I have the d90(and plan on using it in future as a backup/telephoto body)
Video: as I said, I earn my living with photos, so I cannot help you here :) had it on about 2 times, for about 10 seconds :D
Cons:
- one that strikes is, the need to hold an extra button when locking focus and shooting burst, on the d3 you dont have to do this
- FPS, Matters what you shoot, Landscapes no problems, Drag Races more problems :)
- 51 AF vs 11(?) AF, Same as FPS
Pros:
- Comparable ISO than D300 (only d3/d700 is better)
- IQ comparable with d300
And of course, you can a have a helluva a body, it is just as good as the lens :)
