ISO and WB seem to be much improved on the D700. To those who have updated have you noticed any differences on any of the cameras with new firmware?

If Nikon has half a brain they have a check system in place to keep you from doing so.
If they are smart and spent the time, the camera itself will verify:
1 a checksum (or other quick and dirty way to tell the firmware file is not corrupt),

and also
3 a cryptographic signature to prove the firmware file in question is what it claims to be.
What Nikon has actually implemented, I have no idea, but I'll bet you a dozen donuts you need to at least find the header differences between the most recent D300s firmware and the most recent D300 firmware, and modify the D300s file accordingly.

Well, is it worth a try at fooling around with this? I don't mind the effort, I just don't want to mess up anything.
I'm short on details because Nikon's firmware seems to have been far less researched than that of Canon, much less other consumer electronic devices. The firmware upgrade process for the iPod Nano 2G and up (for example) is much more deeply understood, despite Apple's attempts to obscure the process through encryption.
Part of that, I'm sure, has to do with the cost of experimentation, as bricking a Nano is not nearly as costly as bricking a DSLR, but as the Canon firmware hacking scene is much more active it can't explain the full discrepancy IMHO. If anyone has a lead as to an active organized effort to learn more - I'm all ears and very interested.

Worth fooling around? No.
If you are unaware of a recovery mode for your camera, any attempt forceably install a firmware not supported by Nikon (even if said firmware has a good chance of working) is very risky.
A place to start, if you are interested, is to look into how other devices get modified.
What comes to mind first is the Sandisk Sansa E200. Sandisk had a published recovery procedure for borked _legitimate_ firmware upgrades. Knowing there was a fallback procedure insures that failed experimentation can be recovered from. I am not aware of such a published procedure from Nikon - but you could look for one.
Elsewise recovery either relies on knowledge Nikon keeps close to their chest (an unpublished easy recovery method) OR writing a new firmware directly to the device through JTAG or similar.

Otherwise, yeah, it's probably a better idea I stay away from this.
haha yeah it is. I heard about those who went to install a D3's frimware on a D300 and had some serious issues.
I just looked at Nikon download center and it clearly says:
"NOTE: This update is for the D300S model only, and not the D300. DO NOT attempt to upgrade the D300 with this firmware."

When I say ISO I mean improved noise performance not higher ISO range. AF seems to be improved slightly as well. Anyone notice a difference?
How do you know anyway? Did you "accidentally" load the D700 firmware on to your D70? ;^) Gee, let me try that...
D70 isn't my only camera, just my favorite :^)

So NOBODY has updated their camera's firmware?! After all the crying about when the next firmware updates would happen nobody has done it? I know there are a lot of D700 and one or two D300S users here. Nobody has noticed a difference?
Nobody cares nowadays I guess. My dad refuses to update firmware on anything, he just claims it'll mess it up—huh? Anyway, let's just post randomly to keep this thread active until somebody speaks up ;^)
Or beg Nikon for a D300 update so I can say something ;^)
Haven't done it yet. Don't care about Auto WB, but some of the bug fixes look good. What are people saying about ISO performance?
I updated my D700 just after I read about the update. Although I haven't went out and shot anything yet, I hope to do so this comming week. Have to talk my self into going out in this cold and snow.

NIko I did update the firmware on my D300s and the only differnce I noticed so far is the primary wheel now changes the shutter speed whilse the secondary wheel changes the Fstop on the lens. Before the firmware I had it the other way around. I find it strange because I am used to change the Fstop with the primary wheel. I looked on the menu to see if I can change it back but no luck. Is there a way?
AS far as the picture goes and other bits I still have to test it.

Truth be told, I never have updated the firmware on any hardware I own other than my iPhone. Even that, I only do because Apple adds obvious features and practically forces the update on you anyway.
I tried to update the firmware on my SB900 but it turned out that i was already running the most current version.
did update 2-3 days ago my d700... did few random test shots just before and did few just after (same settings same objects)
cant see any difference ... meeeeh whatever I guess

Exactly right Nau. whatever! thats how I felt as well when updated my D300s.
Allthough I had to fiddle a bit wiht the settings because for some reasons they where changed during the update.
