    Remember this rumor:
“Nikon is working on new battery grip for the next DSLR camera (possibly D800). It will have GPS module build inside, small LCD screen and some outputs.”

    Today Canon announced this
    http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/07/canon-announces-new-wireless-file-transmitter-units-for-latest-p/

the rumored Nikon battery grip now makes more sense – it may not be a battery grip at all

I just saw this out on engadget. Looks cool. I hope Nikon gives us something similar.

Of course my guess is that an eye-fi card would probably work better than either Nikon or Canon's buggy solutions. Hey Nikon! Open your camera platform and let real dev's handle all of that. You just concentrate on lenses and camera bodies.

Maybe Nikon's version will actually have space for the camera batteries as well. canon's transmitter seems like a waste of space without being able to carry a battery pack too.

but there were some wireless transmitters for nikon before, so why this is such a big deal. It would be nice, if Nikon could put - WiFi, gps and battery slot into battery grip

Yeah, what's stopping Eye-Fi from making a compact flash version of their cards?

It would certainly be more practical than a battery grip with no extra batteries in it.
