There have been a lot of camera announcements for CES (Consumer Electronics Show) this year. More so then I remember in previous years. The show officially starts on Thursday but all ready Samsung, Kodak, Olympus, Sony, and even canon have made new product announcements. Might Nikon make a COOLPIX announcement soon too?

I think it's a high probability. But what will it be? Kinda cool if it were the purported EVIL camera. Or the D900.

Sony unveiled a point & shoot camera at CES with a built-in COMPASS! Is a digital compass a feature you'd like to see in a Nikon DSLR?

Not really. If they gotta add stuff to the camera, add a built in gps.

I'm satisfied with my geotagging solution, it works well, but would clearly be one less step if the GPS was built into the camera.
A compass, on the other hand, really needs to be in the camera itself, or elsewise attached. My Holux GPS receiver has no such restraints, it can be anywhere near me.
Therefore, IF Nikon was going to do one and not the other I'd prefer compass.
Position is cool, but position + orientation opens up lots of fun possibilities in this networked world.

Actually the new Sony HX5V has both built-in GPS and digital compass. All inside a thin compact body for $350USD! So what's the hold up with moving this technology into a big, burly Nikon DSLR again?

I heard, that the best function in the new sonys is the ability to shoot panoramas - I've seen some results and I'm very impressed

Actually adamz that feature first appeared on Sony's HX1 last year. It's also on the WX1. It's a very useful. I used it a lot on my vacation.

Nothing new from Nikon at CES2010 :^( More cameras were announced at this years CES than last year! A 50% increase, wow.
Nikon must really be confident in what it's taking to PMA! It's going to be awesome!
