Rschnaible, did you take tour of "The Rock" ? I was in the SF area and regret not taking tour. It is pricey though....

I live here and in all those years I have taken the tour but once.... I must say though it was a very interesting tour and well worth the ticket....

Your shot is very acceptable @ f/5.6 for that distance, specially on a moving subject. You did a great job. But be aware that the lens you are using is "wide open" at f/4.5 @ 70mm, while at 300mm the maximum aperture opening is @ 5.6. If you where able to shorten your distance to bird then you would have been able to taken that shot @ f/4.5 and thus blown the back ground (a.k.a better bokah) even more.

Sorry, but that simply isn't true. Shooting at a longer focal length will provide significantly more subject isolation and background blur regardless of f-stop. Especially when comparing 300m to 70mm at the described f-stops.

Yes, but it also should be said that if you are seeking good bokeh around a sharply focused subject you should try to shoot at f2.8 or larger (meaning using a smaller f-stop number like f2 or f1.8 or f1.4). When shooting at f4.5 or f5.6 you will need a large distance between your subject and the background (like 15 to 20 feet or so - and obviously a penguin's body is not that long!) to blur that background significantly to "blow it out" into good bokeh. The physical limits of optics, at either 70mm and f4.5 or 300mm and f5.6 simply won't let David "blur out the body" as he was trying to do. Now if David was shooting with a 300mm f2.8 lens wide open he would be more successful at accomplishing his objective. But access to such lenses is not realistic for 90% of us.

You guys want to see nice bokeh.....look at this one from Squamish....one of the best examples you will find

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/squamishphoto/7587375826/in/photostream

And the variables in f/stop, focal length, etc. really need to be played with rather than discussed. we can talk all day, but until we go out and shoot some stuff, we are just chatting....

So, why don't we take all this chat over to another thread on Bokeh or something and just post photos here....

Seems in the few days I was absent for the holiday the shots have really amped up on here! I need to take a longer look at some of these. Great stuff.

@SquamishPhoto, donaldejose & msmoto: Each of you make a valid point.

@SquamishPhoto: My comment you quoted, was target at clarifying the lens David was using (70-300mm 4.5-5.6) functional operations. Please note this comment of mine as well: "For me, DOF has to do with: my distance to the subject and my lenses maximum aperture."

I will honor msmoto's request and end it here. David if you would like us to provide you with more info please start a new thread as we will make our contributions there.

    Cheers...

This is a photo I took last year covering High School Basketball for a local paper. You can see how 145mm (200mm in FX equivalent) on DX at f2.8 creates "bokeh" or separation of a background which is about 15 to 20 feet behind the main subjects.

It was a cold and grey day in Bucharest, but I could not resist taking the D600 for a first walk. Still getting used to the great features [and weight:)] of this vs the old D80.

D800 w/24 1.4G @ F/2.0. Truly an amazing piece of glass Golf007. Not that this pic does any justice...but I intentionally shot @ large aperture to get an idea of sharpness & contrast.

Bob, really like the light in your Arizona Shot.

Over here in the Northeast weather was miserable the last 2 days and so I decided to try tethered shooting (inside). This works really great in LR4 - I ran it over an extended USB cable and all of a sudden you have a 24" LCD screen rather than the 3" LCD screen.

Adamz - I love your last post from Ireland. A great (90 degree !) twist on the classic view of multiple horizons fading into the haze plus the tiny silhouettes on the cliff top ... Outstanding.
