I'm looking at getting the d5000 from beachcamera. They have a kit with the "Tamron 18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 AF Di-II LD Macro Nikon Lens" I want to take baby pictures and kid sport pictures. Do you think this would be a good one lens?- or should I just get the kit lens which is 18 to 55, and then buy a second lens?

I've never owned a dslr before. Thanks for your help

Don't get the Tamron, I would stick with the kit lens. That Tamron has worse image quality, no VR (vibration reduction), and will focus much slower - all of which makes it not very well suited to shooting children or sports.

Welcome to the forum Jeffkra :^)

I'm with Branddonfs. The image quality from the Tamron isn't all that great, especially at the long end (250mm). Get the Nikon 18-200 if you can afford it. If you can't justify the price then just get the 18-55 and the 55-200.

I'll go for 18-55 + 70-300vr, makes a better combo than Tamron, or if on a budget go for 55-200 instead of 70-300

    I'm with adamz/nikodoby, there's a kit with both 18-55 and 55-200 for $850 which is a good value.

For $944 the price is tempting deal, but when you really look at what you are getting, it is all very much substandard products they include. The case won't hold all that comes with the kit so it is useless, the lens is not great at all, and the cheap filters will degrade image quality instead of enhancing it.

I am not all that crazy about the 18-55mm lens, but the additional cost for it in the kit makes it pretty much a no brainer. The optical quality and focus speed beats out the Tamron.

How much do you want to spend?

I'm with this 100% - though I would even go so far as to recommend make sure some of the other "basics" are covered, such as a decent starter tripod, strap you can live with (I'm not a fan of the stock ones), cleaning kit, second memory card, remote trigger (the 5000 does take the cheap IR one, no?) etc are covered before spending _all_ your money on the body and glass.

Thanks so much.. after 2 weeks of trying to figure this stuff out this was the most helpful. I think I'm going to just get the standard 18-55 kit, and then save money for the 70-300vr. Thanks everyone!

    Good choice!

I would love to get the 70-300, but that might be too much of an overlap, considering I have an 18-135.
