I don't think it would be worth the hassle. If you were buying new and looking at the two cameras, I'd probably say go with the D5000 for the IQ, but since you already have the D80, i don't think it's worth the time/money, plus you'd be giving up internal focusing motor, and taking a big step down in finder quality.

You won't get a better kit lens then the 18-135 with the D5000. That said, the 18-135 is a fairly marginal lens. You might want to consider investing in some cheap primes or a wide zoom like the Tokina 11-16mm. Those will let you get shots you can't currently capture, where the D5000 will just get you shots that are barely better than what your getting now.
For movies, or shots at weird angles, the D5000 is the camera to get. For everything else, I prefer the D90. I'd skip the upgrade from the D80 to the D5000 because it isn't really an upgrade. There are some new better features, but you give up a lot by loosing AF on older lenses (some of your best options if you are on a budget). On top of that, if the D200 was selling for $600 at best buy, then you probably can't expect to get more than $400 for your D80.

I may have beaten you to the punch, but the rest of your comment is still worthwhile. I agree with it all.

I agree, the D5000 is not much of an improvement over the D80.Loosing the ability to use non-AF-S lenses is a deal killer for me. From my experience owning both the D80 and D90 I can wholeheartedly recommend upgrading to the D90 from the D80. The D90's better implementation of matrix metering and auto D-Lighting, higher frame rate, larger LCD with more informative information available on the LCD and D300-like software control makes it worth the upgrade from the D80. If the D90 is too expensive at this time then get some new glass or save for the upgraded body, the D5000 is only the first of Nikon's new dSLR designs, there will be more to come with in the next year or two...

Bob
