sorry hearty but it's not. it's not sharp, and the background is.... very not interesting - especially the legs . In situations like that I would probably go either extremely wide - to show this bird and it's surroundings or go extremely close - to show some details.

    LOL !!

But adamz is right.. I have done a fair job is covering up the weaknesses but I can do better(esp if I had a shiny 300mm f2.8 ;-) ). Still it was a fun experience I wanted to share with my mates here :-)

But that's the thing. You don't have a lens like that nor are you a bird photographer and it didn't look like the lighting was the best. Considering those circumstances, I'd have to say that you did a pretty good job. Photos of that quality are frequently published. So no, it doesn't meet the strict artistic standards but it is a keeper.

gentoo - no, I have to disagree with You, it's not a keeper, and certainly the statement that "Photos of that quality are frequently published." is not in place. I may sound rude to some of You, but I guess this is the place, where we share our opinions and not where we say "ohh... uhh... how great... how wonderfull...", as this is not bringing us into our main goal - making/taking better images. As for Your hamster post... well, sorry if You haven't understood my post, but english is not my mother tongue.

hearty - as for the last picture, I think the composition is really nice, it's great You managed to capture this bird in such a beautiful pose. If You happen to shot similar subjects in the future, You could try to position the bird a little bit more down (less rock, more background), and use the standard 3:2 crop factor. This will give the bird a little bit more space.

aes - haven't seen such bird before, nice capture

LMAO! You disagree with me? No way LOL. I won't argue with you about what's in print and what isn't. You cannot know that not being a birder. Pick up a copy of Klaus Malling Olsen and Hans Larsson's gulls of North America, Europe and Asia and look at some of the pictures then tell me that one more time LOL.

I hear what you're saying though. I think in hearty's case there are two ways to look at it and I looked at it from a different point of view.

Nice Chickadee (tit) and crane shots. I'm not sure if this was shot in the US. If so, the Chickadees colors look a bit off and not quite like any species I can identify.

The cranes are Sandhill Cranes I believe.

Thanks NikoDoby and Gentoo, these were shot in Vancouver Bc Canada, not too far from the US though about 30 mins from the border.

Ah yes. Your Chickadee is a Chestnut-Backed. I'm not used to seeing them with the chestnut sides. Mine look like my photo for the day:

South of far northern California, they only have the chestnut color on the back. This was in Oakland, Ca.

AESnakes, I really like your second bird shot. Everything about it. Gentoo - I don't know anything about birds and everything I know about bird photography I learned from your thread, but I think this is my second favorite of yours I have seen. I really like the background and focus. My very favorite is the first Anna's Hummingbird that you posted...

Thank you Gentoo, Jessi and Jonnyapple.

Gentoo I love the detail in your Chickadee right around the stomach great stuff. Really close..

Those Sandhill cranes in the second photo were oblivious to us being so close...I got some even closer pics but it was actually too close to be using the sigma 150-500 I had on there. crazy

Went for a walk today and randomly I was surrounded by eagles in Lighthouse park. I snapped a few photos I'll have them up on flickr at some point.
