No, it is from Phase One, the same company that makes the really expensive digital backs.

I managed to capture a harrier this weekend. probably the same one as the earlier shot with the remains of a bird. Probably a coot.

I'm still working on my technique. This was with my 300 mm f2.8 AF-D and a Kenko 2x TC. The TC gave me the reach but I needed to use ISO 1250 which produced a lot of noise. And trying to get AF on a target like this is a challenge.

    Any pointers Gentoo?

Astro, this would be a challenge even for me. Having said that, I still think you did a good job capturing this female Harrier. The only thing here as that you did use a 2xTC Kenko. I have two Kenkos as well so considering the loss of light and the lower IQ one gets with Kenkos, I'd say this is pretty good. I don't think I could have gotten anything better myself especially since you were using an AF-D lens. That's impressive due to it's slower focusing.

Thanks, Gentoo. I'm reminder of a comment that the best lens for birding is 200 mm longer then the one you're using.

This, and about 50 other I shot in the series, was a case of luck. She took flight about a half mile away and landed a couple hundred yards away.

    And I now know it's a she!

astro, that is a great picture, You can play a little bit with ninja to get rid of noise, but as niko said, one of the best bird pictures so far

You can also play a little bit with viveza, to emphasize the bird - will play a little bit with your picture during the weekend, to see what's can be done

True the 500 and 600mmF4 lenses are perhaps better but you pay a price in more than just money when shooting with them. Although I believe they have VR, even I can't imagine wanting to hand hold those things for a day.

Alot of my close up shots are done handheld with the Sigma 150-500mm HSM OS and I really cant believe how fast it focuses and how sharp the images come out... if you need more reach it is an amazing lens for the money. Im not sure what 500m equals in DX but even with the weight of it I always bring it with me.

500 is croped as 750 in DX, very admirable!

Gentoo, where'd you shoot the downy woodpecker? Sharp. And how far away do you think it was?

Gentoo: yeah, but what did that woodpecker sound like when it laughed?

I didn't even know geese could have expressions, devilsyam. First I thought maybe it was a reflection and distorted by a wave or something.

PE, will you ship me one of those?

Welcome to the forum, PFranco. That's a great start.

That Downy was shot in Oakland, Ca. It was about 30 to 40 feet away.

Gentoo....Thanks, he was a great subject. I had Holly with me(our 105lb Black Lab) and captured a great expression from the raccoon when he saw her.

Jonny....you can come up and visit and take your pic of one. There are only about a dozen that live in this general area. They will eat from your hand too. Come in the Spring time and grab a baby one...LOL
