File Numbering Issue

First off, Happy New Year everyone, and thanks for answering when you should be spending time with your family.

I have a question about my DSLR, it's been numbering the files weirdly. Usually the files go DSC_#####.jpg. However, lately it's been going _DSC#####.jpg. Why is that? I haven't touched anything to my knowledge, it just happened all of a sudden. The pictures all come out correctly, it's just that they've all been named ass backwards.

Maybe it's because I haven't formatted the card in a while.

The camera I'm using is a D40 and a Sandisk 8 gig Extreme II.

My first guess would be that you did in fact change something in the menu system. I am not familiar with the D40 menu but on other models they offer the ability to specify how the images get named. I would be reviewing the menu system for file naming options.

As an aside I would format that card every time you get done removing images from it. But first make a back up of the images.

I second that. I download, verify, backup, then reformat the card.

The starting underscore means you changed the colorspace from sRGB to AdobeRGB.

You may not have noticed it when you changed it, because I'm not sure if .nef files also get renamed being as, IIRC, the only colorspace change Nikon makes to NEF files is tagging user preference (since colorspace is not truly a concern in the NEF itself).

I probably changed it without noticing it.

Any advantage to using sRGB as opposed to AdobeRGB?

The rule of thumb is:
"If you have to ask the difference you should be using sRGB."

The only time you can eek an advantage out of Adobe RGB is if your entire workflow is colorspace aware and properly calibrated. Else you're fighting an uphill battle against the dominant force (sRGB) are are likely to be tripped by an unforseen rock in the road.
Seriously.
The chances that your Adobe RGB colorspace files will be rendered incorrectly unless you have taken full care of your work line is very high. And an incorrectly rendered file looks much worse than a file with a x% (*) smaller color gamut.

*hard to give a fixed number on the size difference between Adobe and s as it varies by luminance.

**Mind you most printers can barely cover the sRGB color space and of those that can few venture deep into the difference.

I might have decided to switch to AdobeRGB because I might be working in Photoshop in the future, so it sort of made sense to use AdobeRGB.

I guess not then.

Oh no, there are reasons to use it, but IF you are unaware it is more of a trip hazard than a tool.

There's no reason you couldn't get up to speed on it in no time. But I suggest you do before you move forward with it.

Photoshop alone isn't reason enough, IMHO. As you have the rest of your workflow to consider as well.

Are you shooting RAW? If you are, then your colorspace doesn't matter. You can choose the colorspace when you open up the file for editing.

This is pedantically true (and while I LOVE being pedantic) it can still lead to issues.
An Adobe RGB aware program might export your raw to an Adobe RGB colorspace psd/tiff/jpg/whatever which next gets touched by a colorspace unaware program which treats it as sRGB.

As I said before, I believe but am not 100% , that Nikon tags the colorspace preference in the NEF file.
