Could Nikon actually turn a profit by doing something like this? They would lose camera sales but gain Nikkor sales. Would it be a good decision on Nikon's part? After all, didn't the first Canon use a Nikkor lens?
Would it be Profitable for Nikon to make EOS-mount Nikkors?

Are you really that desperate to use Canon L lenses? :D
That is one of the oddest things I've ever heard. Nikon would have to pay Canon to use the mount. There'd be a whole bunch of issues- the Canon mount diameter is bigger than the Nikon's, so it'd be a whole mess of retrofits and re-engineering.
So short answer- you won't be seeing a D3000 with a Canon mount anytime soon.
If you're willing to make your own and sacrifice your D70, sure, why not? :D

Ah, but you misunderstood me. Nikon's camera's should retain the F-mount. I was thinking about Nikon making EOS-mount versions of its Nikkors. Think about how the sales of the 14-24 would double!

Besides, remember the good glass comes from Nikon. Always. I ain't gonna use no freakin' L lenses!

He said "Nikkor", so he meant the lenses. You can already buy adapters to use Nikon lenses on Canon mounts, so there's really no point.
I'm chalking this up to a brain fart.

Whoops, yeah, misunderstood you there.
No, I don't think so for both.

The closest you get as far as what works with those adapters is certain adapters will allow the focus light to come on, that green light or whatever color it is with Canons when you achieve correct focus but that's it.
Otherwise, if anything I would see Canon making their camera bodies compatible with the F mount before I see Nikon screwing around with their lenses.

I doubt Nikon would do such a thing. I'm just wondering if they did, would it be profitable? They would be losing body sales I suppose but they would probably gain in lens sales.

well, at least some 14-24 are already used by the reds:

I know lot of people using the 24-70G and the 14-24G on their Canon but I never heard stories of Nikon bodies fitted with L lenses nor EF / EF-S). It would be a Romeo and Juliet style plot ;-)Posted 3 years ago # -
Yes they could, but the lenses would not be called Nikon, but have a different Name, but with maybe Nikkor written on the lens front, this way it would be like Sigma and other brands that makes lenses that works with different brands of SLR's

Yes, but do you think it would be profitable? That's the big question.

If done right they could make money at it and Canon and other could get to use that fantastic 14-24, 24-70 or 70-200 lens that Nikon makesPete

The only thing that Nikon may lose I think is body sales. Think about those who may be dealing with the D3S's 720p for the Nikkors. Think they may jump ship? I think so.
Posted 3 years ago # -
i think so, i know few desperate canon user who really wants to use 14-24 to their canon bodies using "not so cheap adapter" , only to get a sharp "corner to corner" :)
Posted 3 years ago # -
Well then the reds could use nikkors on their "Nikon" cameras.
Edit: I fail at html tags.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Exactly my point. Nikon would lose body sales because those Canuts could have ended up jumping ship to Nikon for the 14-24mm, but instead they'll just buy the EOS mount version.

Nikon will not make lenses in canon mount any time soon. It wouldn't be profitable due to the illogical brand loyalty of many users, and those that are not restrained by such stupid ideals are not great enough in number to offset the manufacturing and re-engineering costs.
Canon photographers wishing to use the 14-24mm or any other such Nikon lens will probably purchase an adapter, or simply a Nikon body on which to use it. If it's that dependent to their uses, it will pay for itself in the long run.
Canon makes some great lenses, Nikon makes some great lenses, when it all comes down to it, everyone has access to great gear, and the only people that really care about all this are pedantic pixel peepers. If great pictures were being made back in the 30s with uncoated lenses and wooden view cameras, will a snazzy nano-coated lens -really- make that much of a difference? The same could be asked of high-end Canon L lenses.

As many people already said, camera makers make a lot of their profits from the fact people need to stick to them once they get a bunch of expensive equipment. This way the companies don't actually need to make the best product every time, they just need to keep things good enough for people not to switch to the competitor.Well, I'm not sure. Remember that even though you can use a NIKKOR on a Canon, it's still a different mount and you've already got a lot of F-mount. So it wouldn't be any different from switching except they would "rebuy" the glass from Nikon.
But I see yours and Chris's point. I doubt anything like this will happen, I was just curious what you guys think.
BTW welcome to the forum Matek!

This definitely won't happen, it's a textbook example of vendor lock-in. The only way it would ever be possible is if it would become illegal and someone would sue Nikon.

But sure, I agree with the OP - in a perfect world with fair competition, all lenses and bodies would be interchangeable so that one could always buy the best kind of each one, just like you can buy whichever tires you wish for your car and whichever monitor you wish for your computer.

Sorry, but I'm not sure what you were trying to say here.Well, I'm not sure. You have every right to be curious, I would even dare saying your opinion is the best one. Things should work like you described in capitalism, the market should take care of everything. Vendor lock-in is an evil practice and the reason I very much dislike companies like Apple and Sony. In the camera world, practically everyone does it, so there's not much alternative :D.But I see yours and Chris's point. No idea, perhaps it could be the fact I'm from Europe (different time zones)? What the duck, my post got a head of yours even though I wrote it many hours later! 8^D

Sorry, but I'm not sure what you were trying to say here.Let me try again: Even though you can use NIKKOR lenses on Canon, if you're currently a Nikon shooter all your lenses are F-mount, not EOS-mount. So you're still locked into Nikon, just not as "harshly".

I mean, so far Apple hasn't done anything that would make me want to switch to Windows, but if they do then I definitely will not appreciate the fact that they've locked me in their iLife. As for Sony, don't even start, they are just plain annoying with things like that. I don't think I use any Sony stuff...

Even if Nikon got drunk and said "Let's Do This!" canon would never grant them a license! It would hurt canon's lens sales, DUH!
Posted 3 years ago # -
Then how come Nikon grants licenses to Sigma and other brands?
