It is the stupid add where he is taking pictures at a Model runway, I don't think it is remotely funny and certainly does not make me want to purchase a D5000

I think Nikon should get back to making adds that show emotion, that shows everyday people using their Nikon camera to capture life's moments

Hopefully that Nikon 140 second contest could create some really neat adds or ideas for future adds

    Pete

BTW if you have found the video for that D5000 add, please post it, thanks

I think I am not the D5000's target audience and therefore what I think of the ad is meaningless to Nikon, or their success. ;)

Frankly, I feel embarrassed to own the d5000 after seeing that ad.

Many people don't understand what a DSLR is really used for and that commercial didn't help in the least.

It makes the camera(or a dslr in general) look like its for rich jerks/wannabes. It makes it look flashy and ridiculous.

His advertisement adds no value to the product or the brand, and honestly does not relate to the actual use of the product or the reasons behind buying one.

I feel like I should talk to Nikon about this...

The worst thing about this add is that it makes any Nikon DSLR look bad, I really think Nikon should fire whomever is in charge of their advertisement incl ashton kutcher.
Then rethink how their advertisement is done, we don't need a idiot spokes person. Nikon just show real people using cameras in real places: Taking holiday pictures, A dad showing his son/daughter how to shot with his/her first DSLR, Show the power of a D3s/300s at a high school football game, and there are many other real ways to show how real people can enjoy their Nikon DSLR

Again maybe that 140 sec contest might give Nikon some much needed ideas

It's a silly commercial, but I don't think it downgrades Nikon. Nikon needs to sell mass market and that's really not any of us in this forum, we're already sold. The ads for us are in photo mags or photo websites. Unless you're the target audience, your views don't count.

But they could do so much better, and still hit target audience

I largely agree with bmxdad. That could possibly be due to the fact that I've never liked Ashton to begin with.

If one compares Nikon's D5000 ad to the one running from Canon right now, our Nikon looks like an ad for a Fisher-Price toy. Canon targets this same audience extremely well without looking like Nikon is looking right now. The D90 commercial wasn't much better IMO.

Yes the Canon adds is showing" you can be a pro with any Canon DSLR" on the other hand you could be a complete idiot and still use a D5000 DSLR

Nikon used to have great adds with real people that showed emotion, great photographic scenes etc, you just wanted to go out there and take pictures

I remember going to a Nikon Photographic Seminar and just leaving with the feeling, I want to go out and take some pictures

Yep, remember the briefly ran D40 commercial? I liked that one. They gave everyone in a neighborhood a D40 and let them shoot with it and showed the amazing results that were possible with it.

You guys are all just jealous that Ashton Kutcher got the job ;^)

But yeah, Nikon's recent ads tend to suck. Real badly too.

So many people are interested in DSLR's nowadays, and I get so many questions.

Nobody's going to use their camera the way Ashton does. He's a complete dork, no offense Niko ;^)

If they show how camera's can be involved in family activities, where everyone's having fun and is happy, now that would be a good ad!

Yes, mb, I think that is much better than anything that has to do with Ashton! A few improvements and I think that would be a great commercial!

Here is the ad for the D5000. The one we're discussing is the one on the right. The other is for the D3000. I think it's a little better, but still too Ashton-centered.

That's probably why the roles he plays in movies are the village idiot roles. Perhaps it's Natural?

Really? I didn't look at the D5000 ad, I have a feeling that "I don't need to see it". And in the D3000 ad he just seems plain silly. Like the stupid face he makes, and then him breaking all the cups. I would have better enjoyed watching him drop his D3000 so Nikon can prove its "durability"—now that would be awesome! :^D

Actually I like a few "snippets" of some of his ads. Like I like the "Click Click Click Click 'Fully Operational'" part of his D90 ad. But he's still a dork :^P

I don't think they are good commercials, but they are trying to put in a point and that is this camera can take good photos that the pros can too. Thats why he was at the runway shooting the models. It shows him and then the other photographers with bigger cameras and flashes and more. It shows that the D5000 can take pro quality photos.

I agree, I really don't like him and wish they would go about it different. But they did have an idea and I think it came off right to most people.

That wedding commercial for the D5000 is just a re edit of the same commercial for the D60. Notice in some shots the D badge is conveniently covered by a hand.

I think we all know I don't agree with Ashton as a spokesdork for Nikon (I voted for Sam Worthington) but these two cameras (D3000, D5000) are selling very well for Nikon. So how much of that is due to these stupid commercials? I guess we can't say they've hurt sales :^(

On a side note my condolences to Brittney Murphy's family. She was Ashton's ex before Demi.

Well I just saw the vids but I think this Ashton guy is "handsome enough" to allow himself to play the fool in public.
Ok some cuts are maybe a bit too much (the roll on the catwalk, the oops glassbreaker, the tonguy, etc.) but globally the clips leave a fresh and young impression after a first watching (now if you see those clips several times a day, it can be boring... I guess).
In Japan Nikon uses Kimura Takuya aka Kimtaku, also a very successful "talent" (which in Japan means the guy is an actor, a singer, a comedian, a guest often invited for tvshows, plays in many commercial ads, etc.) but he's always "too cool", very serious with a glimpse of George Clooney or Harrison Ford's sexiness, and therefore gives a "too mature" feel to the ads. Ashton is very Jim Carrey-esque but without the comical feeling... yet his clips smell the old "hollywood chewing gum" freshness, dunno why...?
