I've the opportunity to buy a decent looking 24-70 2.8 for a good price. The only snag is that it's a month out of a Nikon repair centre. It's had to have a new PCB unit - but what or how serious that is I don't know, does anybody here have a good idea?
It's a month into a 3 month warranty covering that repair but just wondered if it's anything worth worrying about?
Just for those of us who do not know exactly what a PCB unit does....can you explain? My understanding from the posts on NRF is that when Nikon does something it fully tests the lens and makes it as close to new condition as possible. Was the lens "refurbished" by Nikon?
There is nothing to say the lens is refurbished as such, just that it has recently (1 month ago) come back from a Nikon approved service centre, 'Fixation' here in the UK, where it had a new main 'PCB' unit.
I gather its something to do with the autofocus, but the lens is said to be now fully functional as intended.
I suppose there's two ways of looking at it - the lens could work fine, if not better than new.
A PCB = Printed Circuit Board. Basically it means that Nikon had to replace a faulty circuit board in the lens. If it indeed has been replaced there shouldn't be any issues.

Some of the early 24-70 lenses had a problem with a noise when changing focal length, sounded like a bad scratching sound.there seemed to be a roughness when changing the focal length about 35mm seemed to be the worst point, but this varied with different lenses
I had one , Nikon Uk solved the problem, I believe when Nikon first made these lenses, not all were properly lubricated on assembly.
I do know that when repairs are done at Nikon Uk they check all the components of the lens before dispatch, if any faults are found the sender is notified before any further repairs are completed
