I finally did it: Bought, from Amazon, the Nikon D90 kit including the 18-105 mm, PLUS the cheap Tamron 70-300 mm Macro, plus the Nikon 50mm f/1.8. Plus a couple of UV filters, etc.
Total expense $1300.

I will still be looking for the D700 replacement plus good lenses, but in the meantime I will have a Nikon to learn on and a range of shooting options from 18mm to 300mm. The 50 and the Tamron lenses will be usable with the fullframe camera. However, I recognize that the really cheap Tamron ($165) may well not work at all well. If it doesn't, at least I haven't wasted lots of money.

Hope I'm happy with what I get. I did pay the extra $15 to get faster shipping...

You already know my personal guarantee, Nick, so I'll just say that I would be happy if all I had were the D90 and the 50 1.8. Keep us posted.

I'm sure you'll love that great camera to death, the ONE downside (should have mentioned it yesterday) is that _I_ find the 50 too long for in-home use on DX. You're not left with any equivalent for it with the qualifications you mentioned, but it is an issue.

35 f/2 is not nearly as sharp, though it covers FX, and is ~$300
35 f/1.8 is still more expensive, better ergonomics (no blood switch between A and M) but only covers DX/
Your 18-105 is not nearly as fast.

The 35 f/1.8 is only $220 new, soap. Before you order it I'd see if you need it, Nick.

I think the 18-105 is usable for indoors. ISO 800 is not shabby on the D90, and f/4 is sharp at the wide end of the the lens (but doesn't exist on the long end). With that combo, you'd need to set in the neighborhood of 1/60 which isn't fast enough for wild running kids (I know from experience), but is fine for most sitting around having fun kind of shots.

I see where perhaps my wording was vague.
I was attempting to say the 35 f/1.8 is still more expensive /than the 50 f/1.8/, not that it was still more expensive than the $300 I quoted in the line above.
I'm guessing you read my line as "more expensive still" rather than "still more expensive"?

i actually read someone's blog yesterday who used the 35 1.8 on his D3 and D700. . .only could use it wide open at 1.8 to prevent MASSIVE vignetting, but to be honest, it looked DAMN sharp compared to the 35 2.0 wide open AND had the cool vignetting that everyone adds to their portrait pictures ANYHOW. . .

I pre-ordered mine for $199.99 through amazon and it has been, in addition to my 17-55 2.8, the go to lens. . .

Ironically, the 50 1.4 hardly gets any use, but I'm keeping for that one fateful day I plunge into the FX world. . .

Congratulations. My D90 has exceeded my expectation in all regards. The more I use mine, the more talk of "UPGRADE" seems unnecessary. Unless you need reproduction sizes larger than 12 MPs can support, or crop severely, you may never need either FX or an upgrade of any kind.

Thank you all for your welcomes to the Nikon owning gang. I do hope that I will be
happy with my lens choices. In my thinking, even if I am totally unhappy, I will not have lost lots of money with those three. That means that I can spend more on really good lenses...next year.
Expected delivery date is 21/22 Dec; in time for Christmas.

I actually have been toying with the idea of buying that Lomography set of lens' gadgets.

Like Jonny said the 50mm F1.8 is a great lens. I love it. I would rather get the 50mm F1.8 and a 35mm F1.8 DX compared to getting the 50mm F1.4

I am going to get the 35mm DX lens, but the 50mm is still a lot of fun to use, maybe not indoors but most of my photo-a-day has been taken with my 50mm lens

Now, does the camera actually have to be 100% paid for in order to enter?

the 50mm is obviously your best lens now, it's a perfect portrait lens.

If I was you, I'd get what i need from the 70-300 and 18-105 and then sell them to update for a lens that fits your needs more... if you preferred wide angle, you could go with a 10-24... if you preferred telephoto, a 70-200...

I think the D90 is a good start.

Thank you JBL; I'm looking forward to all of the lens. As I said, I am not investing a whole lot of my credit card budget into the lens, so I will not feel too bad if they don't work out.

Frankly, if the Tamron 70-300mm works reasonably, I will consider that astounding, as it only cost $165. Really? How good can a telezoom be that only costs $165....worth of credit card credit....

I am going to break AdamZ's interpretation of the NR rules and will be posting photos LONG BEFORE the camera is totally paid for. And the credit card company better hope that I don't die in the next year...

Don't worry I'm sure it will work out great, your lenses are a fine start, and it will be great to get a look at your first few posts in our Photo-a-day. Maybe you should put a tripod on Santa's list, one of them is a most have for lots of pictures

Actually, bmxdad, I already have a wonderful tripod and ball head. While using my "premium" Canon P&S with manual controls, I read Kelby's 1st book about Digital Photography. One of his initial suggestions is to get a good quality tripod/head. For once, I did something smart and took his suggestion getting a Manfrotto Carbon fiber tripod and manfrotto clutch grip ball head.

I did find it amusingly interesting that I had spent more money on the tripod/head combo than I did for the "premium" Canon P&S with manual controls.

Hoping the UPS guy (he is a guy folks, so I am not being sexist), brings my D90 tomorrow!

Great Tripod, I also use a Manfrotto Tripod and Monopod. Then ask Santa for a flash, he has to bring you something, right
