D300s iso noise in dxomark worse than D90, D5000?

Hi

I am surprised iso noise in D300s not as good as D90 or D5000...
Shows score 977 for D90, score 868 for D5000 and score 787 for D300s.

Considering all 3 cameras use same 12 megapixel sensor, why the low score in D300s?

I like the optical viewfinder best on D300s and have direct iso/qual/wb buttons as this quicker than going though menus on the other 2 cameras.

In everyday use for low light, would I be likely to notice poorer pictures in lowlight with the D300s compared to D90?

The lens I use everyday is the AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G

I traded in the D5000 body this afternoon for D300s. I was able to buy body for $1650 canadian less $700 I paid for D5000.

Now I am concerned that in lowlight conditions, I now have worse performance and paid $950 difference in body and no picture improvements?

Dan, I think you'll find the image quality of the D300s the same or maybe even better. I went from a D300 (worse score than the D300s) to a D90 and can't tell which camera took which pictures.

I thought they were the same sensor as well, but they are different. Similar, but different.

Sensors are similar but not the same, D300s has some additional optical filters in front of it so it may affect sensitivity but overall IQ should be better.

DxO shouldn't be taken as pure gold, it has been known to give very peculiar results.

I thought all their testing was unbiased and based on technical tests only?

What is your opinion of D300s? in low light situations?

DxO leaves a lot out of the overall image quality picture. So don't think the D300S isn't a capable camera.

This was interesting reading. Yes, I agree you can not judge any camera on 1 aspect alone but look at all things such as handling, viewfinder etc. Guess just like in cars horsepower not the only issue but handling, torque, steering etc.

I had D5000 for only short time, did not find vari-angle lcd monitor useful especially if using tripod. Discovered to much button pressing to change iso, wb etc in D5000 so for me improved ergonomics and bigger viewfinder main reason to upgrade.

I was used to the much larger viewfinders in 35mm film slrs in past.

Hoping at some point Nikon will release fast prime wide angle lens that is not a zoom lens.

DXOmarks nothwithstanding, I do not fully agree. I did a test myself and here are my results:

Often I find that charts and graphs don't tell the whole story. Real-life images do! Look at my test results and see if you agree. I am getting older, and my eyes are not as good as they used to be, so maybe you won't. :-)

Don't forget though Darrell that the DxO marks don't test resolution or sharpness.

This is exactly why I give many of these tests little credence. To me, it seems they are measuring the maximum "potential" of a sensor and not the actual performance of it.

There are simply too many things that affect the outcome of a great image to really consider DxO Mark-style tests all that important. Plus, without full knowledge of their proprietary testing methods how do we know for sure? They could be simply feeding bananas to some chimps and letting them make the choice. (Hmmm, I don't know where that thought comes from.)

Glad to be with you guys and gals. I've been lurking around here for a long time, seeking rumor fulfillment. Now, WHEN did you say the D700x would be here, and will it be better than the Nikon D90?

sensor noise is not the most important factor that makes the image less or more noisy, we all have to remember that all cameras use some algorithms to denoise (even when this function is turned off), that's why in test it may look like that d90 has the best sensor, but in the real life some of us may prefer images from d300s better - I guess it's a personal choice. Nevertheless, D90 is an amazing piece of electronics, with probably the best quality/price factor in the whole Nikon lineup.

Thanks for the responses.

I feel better about my purchase as for me having larger viewfinder will help when taking pictures.
You guys confirmed that I should not be to concerned about DxO marks.

I really liked the D300 when it came out 2 years ago so I sure I be happy with D300s.
Sold older D40 when going though divorce and now finally replaced it with something I like better.

I took photography in high school ( 1970s) and collage in the ( 1980s ) still learning from changes from film to digital
