Here is this dummy's story:
When I bought my first DSLR I knew NOTHING about photography, how cameras work, how lenses work, or what any of even the most basic terminology meant. I also do not really have a mechanical brain. However, I was sure that I would be able to read my manual and be fine. I read my manual and cried and felt nauseous. Sure, I could have just set everything at auto and gone to it but I really wanted to understand my camera and everything that I could do with it. So, I bought the Nikon D60 for Dummies.
I loved it, it helped me immensely and because of the experience I had, I would never steer people away from technical guide books, especially if they are starting out where I did.
Sure, it is embarrassing. But, whatever, it gave me knowledge and confidence. And I bought it used for $5. No harm no foul.
If you end up needing a book, don't feel bad about it. It happens.
