I have a D200 and am thinking about switching to the D700 sometime early next year. Just wondering if I'll notice any jump in image quality aside from the boost in ISO performance.

I like available light shooting and am thinking about getting into wedding photography. i figured the D700 would be a better body for those kinds of things. i have a few FX lenses to get me started too.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has made a similar switch and would be willing to share their experiences.

Yes, the D700 is a fantastic camera! You will not regret it. If you have no reason to wait for the D700 replacement, which could be announced as early as Feb or as late as summer 2010, then hurry up and get it. The price has recently gone down quite a bit. And if you don't want or need video it's perfect!

I echo the others. The D700 kills the D200 in IQ as well as being great for available light shooting. If I had the money, I'd get one myself.

I doubt that someone would be taking better pictures just because they're moving from a D200 to a D700 :P

Outside the ISO sensitivity (+-2 stops in my estimation) and the improved resolving power (much greater than the 10 -> 12 MP jump), the D700 has much more color in the shadows and highlights. My D200 has much less saturation at the two ends of the curve.

All that said - for 8x10" (uncropped) prints of daylight shots you'd be hard pressed to see a difference, IMHO. It's ALL the corner cases where the D700 shines, and I do mean ALL the corner cases. There is no tough situation where the D700 doesn't whup on the D200.

One of my friends jumped to a D700 last week from a D200 and he is shocked at the upgrade. Its the little things that you see right away like the larger LCD, cleaner images, full range of usuable iso options, pro body options like closing the eye piece for liveview so stray light doesn't get in, seperate menus to tell the camera you need saturation for this landscape but not a portrait. I could go on and on but I think the D700 is an incredible camera. Jumping from a D200 you'll be amazed. Somebody like me who has a D300, I would be less surprised I think because the cameras share a lot of things like AF style, saturations, face recognition, sensor cleaner etc. I will be upgrading next week finally on Christmas, but I will miss my D300. Ideally I wanted to keep my D300 and have the D700 but financially I can't swing it I have to trade in my D300 for $1200 :( Get one oasisfan 33!

I'd wait for the replacement, but it will probably start at 2999 US dollars. this is just outside my price range and I don't really care about video. I'm sure the replacement will be pretty slick though. wonder how much better ISO performance will be. hope they don throw a bunch of pixels on there to compete with canon and ruin the ISO performance.

aaa... very questionable
I know my photography (photos) improved hips whn I moved from D80 to D700 (and thats not only my opinion)

better camera gives you a lot more to play with - IMHO
and less performance limitations

couldn't say it better monty

buying a new camera will not make You a better photographer

oasisfan33 - for me the answer to Your question is simple. If You are using (or You know that You will be) high iso, than Yes go for d700, as You can't find a better deal (d3s is too pricey for now). If You wanna switch to d700 only to use lower iso, than I would wait for some time, as You wouldn't see too much improvement in IQ. Sure d700 has bigger viefinder and some other tweaks, but the question is: will this affect Your way of taking pictures? will having live view make You a better photographer? is dust cleaning worth spending $2.5k? for me the answer is no. But it's up to You only.
I have d200 and was having the same dilemma last year, I had even the d700 at the cash register once. I'm glad I haven't got it and spend the money on glass - as this really boosted my pictures.
