On the other hand Sony have sure made some horrible entry DSLR's this year. Yes the A850/900 are both great values for what they offer, but entry models are poorly designed and we only sell them when they are heavy discounted, just look at the reviews on them

Lucky this is a Nikon Forum, so enjoy your D3000 or better Nikon camera.

BTW I think that their might be a bit of a supply shortage on the D5000 we are slowly running out, they are just selling that great, but that might only be our supply chain

You had doubts about the D3000 Pete? I didn't :^)
How well is it selling with you? All the info I've seen shows the D3000/5000 are selling very well for Nikon.

The D40 lives on! Maybe it won't have the insane shutter sync speed, but hey, that's okay!

I don't remember if the D3000 supports FP high speed flash sync? The D5000 does right?

I wish they had given it the 900k pixel screen. I'd have probably upgraded my D40 if they had.

No I actual liked the D3000 from day one, it just feels best hands on, easier to sell and Yes it does sell well, just like the D5000. I don't know what the Sony numbers are but I don't remember the last time I sold an Entry Sony DSLR since the made the new style. They look and feel they are made of cheap plastic

Yeah I enjoyed using the D3000. The build quality is way better.

I'll answer my own question. The D3000 does NOT support FP flash sync :^(

I wonder if Sony made a decision to market to people who a) buy online so never handle the camera and b)don't read or trust online reviews.
Their cameras sure look like bargains when you look at tech specs and price.

I think that is the key selling point, nothing more. People who own other Sony products (tv, ps3, compact cameras) tend to buy Sony. Especially if they have no idea of what to look for in a DSLR. Name recognition goes a long way.

I wonder how they feel when they un-pack that Sony from that on-line purchase and actually take a look at the camera. I have lots of people arriving with the idea of getting a Sony, and I don't say anything but just watch them holding the camera, most will say, wow is it ever cheap looking. OK then lets look at a real camera D90/5000/3000 right

I'm guessing the D3000 (really more of a D60 than a D40 replacement) signals a new low-end strategy. It appears that just as with the D60, you get last generation's sensor tech with current generation's processing tech. A win-win for Nikon as the marginal cost for using current processing is negligible, you've ensured a market segmentation for those aware by using an (for lack of a better word) inferior sensor, and you've kept costs to a minimum by shipping the one part which does depreciate fastest - the sensor.

Disabling FP is a dirty trick, though, IMHO. You've already distinguished between the models through more substantive measures, why trim the free features as well?

Yeah I know mb. I was just asking if FP was compatible with the D3000. On rare occasions when I need 1/500 I just go for the D70. It's not a big loss.

I have to say, I never really understood why so many reviewers would make such a big deal about subjective qualities like quality of plastic until I handled a Sony a230 at Walmart.

Well also flip flops amongst calling the Leica M9 the best camera in the world, Nikon DSLRs as the best camera in the world, and going back and saying film is the best thing that happened.

I wouldn't expect any less from the freak.

Nope, and I have to say that that was the first time where if I was shopping for something like that, I would instantly be turned off by the low quality look and feel. Generally, I'm of the opinion that it's good as long as it gets the job done.

So true!

I know a lot of Indian couples that recently got married and are preggers. . .all of them, like traditional indians, SWEAR by Sony(TV's/P&S/cell's/stereo's). . .and hence, I not only lost out on opportunities for photoshoots, but they all bought sony dSLR. . .

best part is they all comment on how they STILL can't get "their pictures to look like mine". . .pay me and I'll show ya!

as for sony... I really liked their ideas, till the time I've played with one...a550 - that camera is soo slow.

This weeks best selling Nikon DSLR according to amazon.com is now the D3000. It was the D5000 a few weeks back. It was briefly the number 1 overall but now that's the canon XSi. I guess no one is listening to the advise given here to buy the D90 Kit, lol. The D90 is no longer in the top 5.

Money talks people. Consumers want cheap $$$ cameras not high ranking DxO scores.

Oh and the top selling Nikon overall is the $81 USD L20 point&shoot?! It comes in at number 5 this week. The other four are canon P&S and DSLRs. The D3000 comes in at number 10 in the overall list.

I sold 3 D3000 today, one D90, I think the D3000 might be hard to find as we get closer to X-Mas
