When I can afford a D300s (now have D90), I was planning on getting the 85/2.8 PCE. Does anyone here have experience with this combination for macro? I'm certain it's terrific on FX, but I'm now happily committed to DX.

It's a superb lens on both dx and fx.
I have a friend who even used it for street photography on his d300 (not exactly what it was meant for).
manual focus on the field is always a pleasure and the tilt shift feature is very fun to play with.
if you shoot landscapes you can use the tilt to get the very trendy small miniature model look to a city (when shot from a tower).
the lens is very sharp wide open until f/16 on a d300 (really), the focus ring is big and comfortable, and the macro capabilities of the 85 f/2.8 are useful when shooting close (even for portraits). if I had to replace my 105 f/2.8 vr, I'd get the 85 PC :-)Posted 3 years ago # -
85mm is pretty telephoto for DX. You may want to consider the 45mm PC-E. I have used the 24mm PC-E on both FX and DX and it's the perfect tilt-shift for me (I'm a DX shooter).
Looks like the 45 and 85 both focus down to a 1:2 macro ratio.

Thanks very much. I have the macro lenses that I bought in order 60 - 105 - 200. This time I thought I go 85-45-24 as needed since I like the extra "reach" in macro. While I shoot some landscapes, I shoot much more macro.
