I use it because......... well, no I don't use it. I do own a Nikkormat FT2 though!

I seriously considered the D3 until I realized I wouldn't get those sexy Canon primes.

I have a powershot because my D300 won't fit in my pocket and my coolpixes all had photos that reminded me of a time I swam in a pool with so much chlorine I looked like Jeff Spicolli in Mr Hand's class :)

I like Nikon and Canon, both manufacturers have great products and some advantages one over the other. I have equipment from both brands and use them without any brand-related fan or phobia problem.

They both have weak points and strong points. Although I guess Nikon has higher build quality and it's reflected in its price, but it's not perfect either. Canon offers wider lenses options, and innovative features that Nikon use to add sometime later, and sometimes in a better way. But this doesn't happen always either.

At this moment I like Canon's Full HD implementation, but they missed or intentionally locked too Serious aspects on it's first aproach. I'm talking about the EOS 5D Mark II (wich also offers high res still images)
The lack of manual settings in Movie mode, makes it very hard to use for professional tasks.

It's curious that Nikon introduced the first DSLR with movie mode, but they did it in a very poor way. Canon followed soon with a much better implementation, but with much limitation that can be really unlocked with just a firmware update.

I think Canon will update its firmware to allow some kind of manual settings. Thousands of people are requesting it, worldwide. You can view few hundreds of them in a petition started this month:
    http://www.petitiononline.com/5dmark2/petition.html

Video on Full Frame DSLR is not a "gimmick" at all (if it is professionally implemented), it can allow results not possible using camcorders or videocameras even costing several thousands dollars (due technical reasons)

I hope Nikon offer a new DSLR soon with Full HD video and Full manual settings, because it can also force Canon do something similar.
Nikon has nothing to loose allowing full manual control on video, and can gain lot of customers who are waiting for this implementation.

As always, Competition can bring us better options, features and prices.

I use both Nikon and Canon, with pro bodies and lenses. The difference is not that so obvious as many people argued. Indeed, they have different design and different styles, in all, it's just pure personal favor if you hold D3X and 1DS MarkIII in your left and right hand...

Of course. We can respect that there are people out there who want video on their DSLR. There are also people who don't particularly care. I don't particularly care, although if I actually picked up a camera with a mature system in the future it might change my mind. Right now I don't care that the D300 doesn't have it and it seems like the only update the D400 will likely bring is video and a few extra MP.

I wanted to get Canon 5D, but the ergonomics of it weren't to my likening. My old Nikon D70s just fits so nicely in my hand. Besides I missed having the sub-command. I also like having dedicated button for everything. In this place Nikon won. But I am still thinking of switching to Canon full frame.

On the side I prefer point and shoot cameras from Canon than Nikon. Probably the easiest and fastest interface I have used. I hate fiddling with menus and wasting my time.

I started with Nikon 3 years ago b/c at the time the D50 was a better bargain than the Rebel xt. I have decided to stick with Nikon b/c i fell they give you same or better than Canon does. Nikon uses more metal in their construction, lenses have better feeling construction and the optics are just as good, if not better than the canon equivalent.

If I were to make a switch, it would be to Olympus. But that's another story altogether.

Plus Nikon pays me more when I sell their stuff ;)

Hmmm, I like Nikon cause I'm a brand addict, I have to say.

On a more neutral note, I prefer their ergonomics, i.e. placement of buttons - direct access to functions, although it only gets real good on the D300, which is too expensive for me - and it's too heavy, anyway.

Canon on the other hand, always has the better feats for less money, which is true for the bodies as well as the lenses.

I shoot only Nikon, but the rest of my family shoots Canon, so I have a good amount of experience with their SLRs. I agree that Canon seems to give more features for the same amount of money, but it seems Nikon gives you a better build quality for that extra price. Although, shooting any modern lens after spending a day with an old AI or Pre-AI lens always makes me feel like no one knows how to build a lens anymore. Those old lenses are just a joy to hold.

Because my dad shot nikon, and I could use his lenses on my first body (N55) when I was a fair amount younger.

I just wish that there was a standardized mount in-between manufactures. I'd love to have the Canon EF 17-40mmL, or one of those nice, weather-sealed olympus lenses.

canon has gone from being the unchallenged king to being matched neck and neck and even delegated to keeping up with nikon in some areas. If my decision about which brand to choose had come 10 years ago, it would have been simple: canon.

enter 2009. things have changed a lot. sony entered the market, canon stranglehold is gone in the consumer and enthusiast market, and they are now trully having to compete. Nikon has finally woken up to digial as the #1 format to invest and with home runs like the D3, D700, and D300, it had surely cost canon a lot of people. I was one of those who decided the nikon lineup was equal if not superior in the areas I care for.

Canon reminds me a lot of microsoft today. they are big, clumsy and wish to keep the status quo at all costs but little by little are weakening, cracks are appearing in the otherwise impenetrable walls and if current trend continues, the irony of it all is that they may repeat the nikon chapter of the 90s. Back then where nikon were on top and found themsevels victims of their own success. By the time they realized they were 2nd place, it was too late.

Nikon is playing a pretty agressive game and I'm sure the d400 and d5000 will meet the challenges. That's why I'm not really worried about my brand choice. I like the nikon of the late 2000's. It's what they should have been all along.

Well I shoot Nikons. My first SLR was a D40, now I shoot with a D300. Seriously, after owning a D300, the bar has been raised for me. This camera just feels like it's a natural part of me. I'm a big guy with fairly big hands and long fingers, the D300 fits perfectly for me.

Having said that, some of the Canons have appealed to me as well. I've considered getting a 40D and even looking into the new Rebel T1i. Whether or not a get the new Rebel will depend on what the D400 offers when it's released. I want a second camera to have in case I need to get one repaired or he GF wants to borrow one, I don't like to be without. However if the D400 costs what's it's rumored to cost, I could pick up a 500D or even a 40D plus a Canon lens for around the same price. And if I did that, I'd no longer be locked into one brand. The only thing that worries me is Canon changing their lens mount again. Nikon has had their F mount 50 years now. It all depends on what the D400 offers for it's price.

Because Ashton Kutcher told me to.

But seriously... when I bought my first DSLR I was deciding between the D70 and Digital Rebel. Ended up going with the D70 and never looked back. But honestly, I think it would have been fine either way.

People at work often ask me what camera to get, and I tell them I know more about Nikon (and am biased in their favor), but that it honestly doesn't matter. You might as well compare Coke and Pepsi. Neither one is better or worse. I tell them to get Nikon or Canon (instead of Sony, for example) because they have a larger user base, a larger support network, a longer history, and bigger libraries of lenses to choose from. I tell them the best reason to choose one over the other is if you know someone who has a lot of one brand of lens, you can borrow lenses from them and save yourself a few thousand dollars.

I went with Nikon and have been nothing but happy ever since.

What an interesting thread considering I am at this particular fork in the road TODAY. On one hand, the T1i has a lot to offer a newbie like myself, but then again, I've been captivated by the Nikon brand as well. I am looking to make my 1st DSLR purchase soon, and the only thing that has been holding me back from making a purchase (Nikon or Canon) has been thanks to sites like NikonRumors and CanonRumors that have fueled my desire to wait and be patient for the latest and greatest my money can buy.

My dad has a D40 and I have borrowed it a few times to check it out, but for some reason, I've been really attracted to the Nikon D90 as an alternative option for my first DSLR. Should I even consider waiting for a D400? Or would I be in over my head with too much camera? (As a side note, I may be new to SLRs, but I would consider myself an enthusiast with desire to learn and grow as a photographer.)

In my personal opinion, I would get the D90 if it's your first DSLR. A camera like a D400 or D300 can be overwhelming for beginners. Unless you've become good with the D40, it will be a huge learning curve. Hell forget curve, we're talking sharp corner! lol

Nikon felt much better and more natural in my hand. I tend to hold a camera whit one hand a lot while setting up shots, and Nikons fit my hand a whole lot better.

@Greenlight I think the D90 would be a very good camera for you. I don't think the D300 would be overwhelming if you're serious about learning, but I do think that the extra money would be much better spent on lenses than on the better camera.

Greenlight, I agree with tai. Get the D90 and spend the extra on a lens or two. The lenses will last long past when the camera body has given up the ghost.

I've used both and I have a Canon PowerShot G7. But I gotta admit—as others have said—Nikon's just got the ergonomic design down. Rebels don't sit in your hand as well as any other Nikon I've shot with. Yes, they're both great brands. Yes, they both shoot exceptionally brilliant photos. Ultimately, Nikon's a smarter decision—for me, at least. Especially since they've maintained a constant mount for their cameras and lenses.
