Wow! while we were all arguing the merits of focus breathing, Nikon dropped a new lens on us! I don't have the cash for the 300mm 2.8, but that new TC lens would turn a 70-200 into a 140-400 f4 (or whatever 2 stops above 2.8 is... no time to look it up today).

So now that I was almost sold on the new VR2 version, I could have the older version (also very good) AND the new teleconverter for the same price. That's pretty compelling given that I would probably be using this lens on DX for the forseeable future.

DARN YOU NIKON! .... Now what am I going to do.

It's 140-400 f/5.6. No need to look things up, 2 stops is obtained by multiplying the old f/stop by 2! :)

I'd wait until reviews for the new TC come out, but if it's better than the current version it might be worth it. 2x TCs in general seem to be rather risky though. At that magnification the lens has to be pretty perfect for it to be worth it, but then again the old 70-200 is supposed to be amazing on DX, so who knows.

I have the old one and have the TC20, below is a shot taken with this combination - handheld (it was already in the PAD thread):

as for me the IQ is great, the only drawback I see is the AF speed, so if the new one behaves better, I'm so eager to have it in my bag.

Nice shot adamz ! Very sharp !

I hope the AF speed is up to the job, especially with airplanes. That needs to be very fast. Let's wait for some tests.
