When do you think Nikon will show Full HD 1080p @ 24p video in DSLR?
    Q2 2010? Nikon D90 successor?

    welcome here blacksnoopy

as for me I really don't care about the video function, so for me it can happen even in 2015

but to be more specific, the biggest problem with Nikon going 24fps/Full Hd, is to change the way Nikon captures movies. for now on, nikon movies are a series of frames, grabbed from liveview input, that's why it's so hard for nikon to go higher with resolution, the pro for this is that single frames are fully usable as pictures, which is not the same for other brands on the market

Canon have DSLRs with Full HD, Panasonic too. Pentax K-7 records 1536 x 1024 @ 30fps.

I hope Nikon to announce this feature with AVCHD in the next few months or I have to sell my Nikon gear :/

I really could not care less about video full, semi or any others but if you really fill that way I think you should sell all your gear as I am sure you never use it much at all.

Video is such a funny animal, first we were complaining that we don't want to have video spoiling our cameras, they are after all bought to take pictures. Now the quality is not good enough. I also buy my camera to take pictures, and I honestly doubt that most wanting to get this advanced HD video on their DSLR would even have glue on how to produce a high quality video any better than I could do with my Camera Phone

BTW I don't want video in my next DSLR, but it would be fun to have something like what Casio has, high speed stills, up to 1000 fps at reduced quality (would have to be done in LiveView and app for a second in lenght)

    Pete

Hope blacksnoopy that you find piece and tranquility in the Canon world

Nikon just made it clear with the new firmware release which came out today that it's not that interested in developing the D-Movie further more. Even though we've been asking it for so long. SO to answer you're question plain simple. If you really need Full HD, same as me here I think we need to look somewhere else until Nikon wakes up and comes up with that option.

    That's one possibility.
The other (and the one I find more plausible) is:
Nikon just made it clear with the new firmware release which came out today that it's not possible to take D-Movie any further given the restraints of the hardware in question.

OK valonqe we get it, you're leaving Nikon for canon. Good for you, but you don't have to make the announcement in every "full HD when" thread. It makes it seem like you were never interested in a Nikon solution and only looking to troll. So good luck with your 7D and have fun making your movies.

NIko. Not true, as I mention on previous posts I have been Nikon user for a long time and its not easy for me to just convert to Canon. When I bought my D300s 7D was already out and I knew it's capabilities over video but because I am Nikon user and the rumors that I kept reading here I thought that Nikon will come out with a solution.

Although I would of loved to have Full HD and differnt frame rate it didn't bother me that much as much as having that manual control.

Soap, Nikon can fix the manual control very easy because it is fixed through sft ware, they did it with the D3s. As far as asking them for more option maybe they can't offer due to restriction on the sensor, which again I don't understand.

But any, that issue is going to stay secret with Nikon same as they did with this Firmware.

I fully understand that belief, and you may well be right, but I wasn't only referring to the sensor when I said "hardware".

Not knowing anything other than the marketing/brand names for their processing engine hardware we are left to guess as to it's raw (not as in NEF) processing power, RAM and IRAM limits, and such.

I think nikon has decided that they can sell 1080p and thus they have no interest in giving it away. In fact, I believe that will probably be the #1 feature they market on the D90's replacement... with a side of reticulating screen (still w/ 900k pixels, and faster frame rate.

I'd never buy that camera, but its increasingly clear to me that people want to make their own HD movies.

My point though is that Nikon won't give away something they believe they can sell (I wouldn't either). Manual control? Less sellable, but packaged with HD and they will call it "The Ultimate Movie Machine!". Presto! You just dropped a grand on a camera you didn't even know you wanted a year ago.

I shoot on a RED ONE if anyone cares... use all Nikon glass for every shoot, but can't take on smaller gigs until Nikon do something about their HD capabilities on their DSLR's.

Love my D90 too! No way would I sell and to to Canon for the sake of waiting a few months...

Zacuto just did a very interesting test in a fill tom DSLR shootout and the results were surprising. the D3s, even though it was only 720p really held up well... (on the web anyway)

Is there any update on this. I seriously need a cam with Movie capabilities Full HD.
    The Canon 550D offers this...
    - 1.920 x 1.080 (29,97, 25, 23,976 B/s)
    - 1.280 x 720 (59,94, 50 B/s)
    - 640 x 480 (59,94, 50 B/s)
Would love to see an upgrade the DSLRs.

The canon 550 is below 700€ already. Hope Nikon pimps their SLRs asap.

    Ps. I don't want a canon :(

Welcome to the forum, Maui. The latest rumor is a D3100 that will do 1080p (still just a rumor):

    thx,
    I wrote this
    "1080p/24 and 720p 30/24"
Not sure what 24 or 30/24 means. If that B/s it's quite short on the 550d in 50 in 720.

guess in case the 5000 and/or the D90 will get pimped as well in the same slot it might be even better then

    keep my fingers crossed

Until the SLR's have proper movie function like a camcorder but with the advantages of SLR lenses, I'm not interested. I have movie on my D5000 but have never used it - I just read the manual, laughed and forgot about it. It seems like they launched a half developed product as a stop-gap.

Yeah, that number is the frame rate (frames per second), so cinema rate (24 fps) at 1080p and cinema or the standard rate for NTSC regions (30 fps) at 720p.

I'm with those of you who don't really care about, or want, video cabability on my DSLR. I've had some decent dedicated video cameras in the past, thinking video would be interesting, but it just doesn't do anything for me (as a photographer). I'd rather not has any extra buttons, software bloat, etc., on or in the camera. However, I do understand that some people actually want video cabability. Personally, I think you'd be better off buying a dedicated video camera, but that's just me ...

Good Video. Still, I'd rather have dedicated video equipment.

Sony anyone? If sony added 1080p to their a950(?) they would have THE killer lineup of cameras between their e mount and their alpha series.

Hmm. My video equipment was sony and my first digital camera was sony (DSC-F717). Maybe you've got something there, kyoshi.

FYI, as was posted above 6 months ago the D90 got a video firmware update and it was quite limited.

Its pretty certain that the D90 and D5000 will get no more updates as the sensor cannot handle it (they both share a sensor).

Given that the D3100 is purported to have 1080p 24/30 all other models certainly will as well. if not something more (60fps? 120 or 240fps high speed? 2k?)

thats all we know right now so if its important to you then sit back, relax and watch the show that will unfold over the next 10 weeks.
