For the past couple of months I have been agonizing over the issue of buying a D90 or D300s or waiting a couple of months a buying the new D700x or whatever it will be called. But now... It seems that it might be a whole YEAR or maybe even more, before the "new" D700 will be released. I'm not happy. And worse, I don't really know what to do? Do I just keep waiting? Will it REALLY be late 2010 or even 2011 before a new FX body is released?
Ideas? Advice? Consoling thoughts?

Just wait until Jan/Feb 2010. That's when the next round of announcements will happen. If it doesn't come by then just get the D700 and use it to the fullest.
d700 with the d3S sensor is probably 6-8 months away.
d700 with d3x sensor.. who knows... should have been out by now... but maybe will be announced at the same time?
NikoBody's advice sounds kind of reasonable; it would get me into a D700 of some kind. I will confess that I have started putting in a few rather low bids on ebay for a D90. So far it looks like the ebay D90 bodies are going for....well...over $750-$800. I would hate to pay that much for a used camera that I haven't even personally inspected. AND, not get any kind of a warranty to go with it. That's beside the issue of just how many shutter clicks the body has experienced. From the ebay ads, they seem to suggest about 2,000 or so, but one really never knows...
At least waiting until Jan/Feb of next year is probably doable for me. My wife can tell that I am really itching to get a camera. She KNOWS I will be; just WHEN is the question.

You can get a D90 for $810 brand new. I'd just buy that and then wait until the D700 with D3s sensor comes out. You could sell the D90, give it to charity, or keep it as a second body.
The price for a D700 body only is now at $2399USD. I'm tempted but I must resist! :^(
I think that the pre PMA announcements should bring new light to Your expectations, unless it will happen like last year, that there were none of them.
As for ebay - if You happen to find a low priced d90, go for it. for me taking pictures is more important than waiting for new gear.
the real question is
what do you need from D700x thats not available right now .... btw Ican tell u for sure that D900 will be out in.... 3-4 years ... can wait for that one as well
I'm waiting for the same update, Nikyvee, but loving my D90 in the meantime. Get it for $800 at amazon, then sell it for a big fraction of that when the D700 replacement comes. You might even find that the D90 is all the camera you need. As time goes by, I'm thinking more and more that I might just keep the D90 and invest in some more lenses. Next year my purchases were going to be the D700 replacement (or D700 depending on what its price does when it's replaced), and an upgrade to my tamron 70-200 2.8 which has been a great lens but I want VR for low-light portraiture. I may just keep the D90 and get both the new 70-200 2.8 and the 24-70 2.8.
I bought my D700 last July. Got a good deal at my local shop for $2400. I think at this point I would wait for the next model. I've heard some great things about the D3s. I must admit it's hard to decide to go with more MP's D3x or low light like the D3s. Maybe sort of get best of both worlds to a point with 18mp's if they Nikon will make one.
Is 2010 a year for photokina (sp?) in Germany? If so, I would expect that any new announcements won't happen until then.
Otherwise, I would say that if you have no camera at all, just get the one you want now and have fun shooting. If you have a camera and just want to upgrade, then waiting it out is worth it.
2010 is a photokina year, but I'll bet there will be announcements around PMA in early 2010 like Niko said. Hopefully some more at photokina, too!
Perhaps Jonny PMA is when we see any upgrades, like for the D700. However I'm sure the big announcements (like any replacements and brand new stuff) will wait for Photokina as this will be the big show. It's only every two years so Nikon, like Canon and the others are going to want to make a big splash there.
NIKIVEE...DO WHAT I DID. GO OUT AND BUY A 5DMII AND NEVER LOOK BACK. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT AND KICK MYSELF ALL THE TIME FOR WAITING. BY THE TIME NIKON GETS GOOD VIDEO ON THE 700, CANON WILL BE HALF WAY TO THEIR UNGRADE ON THE 5DMII AND YOU WILL STILL BE AHEAD WHEN/IF YOU DECIDE TO UPGRADE AT THAT TIME TO YOU NEXT CANON AS NIKON FINDS THEMSELVES IN THE SAME POSITION...AGAIN!!!
