So I have a problem: sometimes when I export a picture from Lightroom and put it on websites like flickr or tumblr, the colors change unexpectedly. Specifically, it seems like the saturation changes. Perhaps I'm just doing something stupid, but I can't seem to figure out what the problem is. Note, this also applies to stuff I save from Photoshop.

    Here's an example:

Left: what I want, right: what it looks like when uploaded.

    Ideas?

PS: I think we need another forum for general questions (not Nikon related)!

Maybe it has something to do with colorspace?

And I believe the forum is for everything photo-related—not just Nikon.

I'm working in the default sRBG colorspace.

I don't know then. Is it a just a flickr thing? Upload the photo somewhere else as a test.

EDIT: Nevermind, I saw you have the same trouble on tumbler. But you may want to try it somewhere else anyway.

    That's all I can think of—sorry.

Hey Kellen! It's the color space you're using. What program are you saving from? Photoshop? That looks like wordpress?

Photoshop and Lightroom do the same thing (which would make sense since they're both Adobe).

I see that it's because your photos have a color space called "DELL 2408WFP" embedded in them. Make sure when you save you're saving them for web. Photoshop has a "save for web" option. Use that.

This sounded promising, but I have tried multiple different settings on the Save for Web thing, and all of them give me the same problem.

Hmmm...It looks like you're on Mac. I say switch to Aperture! But seriously, try exporting with a different app. It should hopefully embed the correct colorspace. iPhoto, perhaps?

Another interesting twist to this is that it only happens sometimes, although I rarely change the export settings.

Also, I tried Aperture first and hated the interface. Lightroom is just so lovely.

When you're saving to web there is a box you should have check "ICC Profile". But before you do that make sure the color space you're working with is in fact sRGB. I'm also seeing ProPhoto color space embedded in some of your photos. When you save to the web always make sure you're saving your images to sRGB and that that color space is the only one being embedded with your photos. Otherwise you will see slight color shifts between applications and browsers.

I forgot to say I'm speaking about photoshop. If your using more than one program and going back and forth changing and saving differently it could explain why you're embedding so many different ICC profiles with your images.

    1) I don't see any option for ICC profile. When I do export for web I check the box that says to export in sRBG.

    2) Turns out when I was saving from Photoshop (regular save) it had a box saying "embed ProPhoto blah blah blah," and when I turned that off, I get muddy low contrast, cold images...

Still, I have not gotten a correct export. And if I do figure this out in Photoshop, how does one figure it out in Lightroom, which has much less flexibility?

In photoshop go to "Edit" then "color settings". What's color space are you working in?

    Er. I'm using CS4, so it's under Image->Mode->RGB Color

    EDIT: INTERESTING. Changing this.

I changed it to sRGB. Same problems.

    Tried Monitor Colors. Same problems.

So your working color space is sRGB just as it appears above? What browser are you viewing your photos online with? Safari?

See my edited post. Also: Firefox.

EDIT: Funny, even the screenshot changed the color of the preview. Is it something up with Firefox's settings?

Nothing. Same over-saturated image. I have to step out for an hour and a half or so, thanks for the help so far.

Re: lightroom. Everyone I've introduced to it has never looked back.

If you're going to cs4 from lightroom 2, try changing this setting in LR2: Edit>Preferences[External Editing] Color Space: sRGB (default is ProPhoto)

LR is color managed so the working space is always the monitor profile. The only places I know of that you can choose a color space are in the place I mentioned and in the drop down menu under file settings on export.

Yeah, this was already at sRGB. Any other thoughts? What's interesting is that a lot of my photos /haven't/ had this problem so far...

EDIT: Another interesting thing is that now I have gotten it so that Safari reads the colors correctly, however Firefox still does not.

I'm glad to see this because I thought I was the only one having that problem.

I have since gone to doing all of my color editing with the Nikon software and other editing with the Adobe software. For some reason the Nikon software always holds the colors true, not sure why.
