Any Nikon F mount lens could work on any Nikon F mount camera with some limitations.
The only thingy is that you CAN actually brake something as unfortunately alphanikonrex did. So be careful and never force anything as KR stated after he realized that he was wrong in his original post. This is his best page though.

I didn't force anything though. It seemed to fit perfectly. Actually it always feels tight on my D70, and I always struggle to change the aperture. When I put it on my D300, it went on naturally. I did not realize anything had broke until now.

OMG OMG I FIXED IT I FIXED IT! Don't ask me how, all that I'll tell you is that I'm an insane risk-taker and that I used superglue.
OMG IT'S FIXED IT'S FIXED IT'S FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You super glued what? You had the broken piece this whole time?

No, I have no idea where the broken piece is. But I just superglued it. Everything functions normally. Except I sacrificed metering with my 50mm. Otherwise my other two lenses mount perfectly, meter perfectly, and autofocus perfectly. I can still use my 50mm except that metering's going to be the same as on my D70: Guess and check.

I don't know if this kills compatibility with other D lenses, but it worked for me since this is my first D-Lens:
My original plan was to make a new tab out of glue and stick it in place of the original. This sort-of worked, except it kept on breaking.
However, I got lucky one time and when the coupling ring spun into the place where the lens works normally, it got stuck. I was able to remove the lens yet the coupling ring was exactly where it should be. I thought for a moment, and figured since I'm able to easily remove the glue if I ever need too, to go ahead with my new idea.
Since the coupling ring was stuck in the correct place, I glued it in this spot near the bottom of the F-mount. This way it wouldn't be interfered with by the lens, which was causing the glue to come off when I tried to make a new tab. I mounted the lens, and all seemed well, as well as with my other lenses.
You might want to refer to the picture I posted earlier.
BTW, on your D40 the coupling tab will probably be more like the tab on the D70, in that case if it broke I would just jam a piece of cardboard in it to put it in the proper position.
