HELP!!! MY NEW 80-200 ƒ/2.8D DOES NOT WORK ON MY D300!

OK, I got it used, but still.

Anyway it's the 80-200 they still make today. Not the push-pull or the AFS version.

So I'm following the proper instructions and setting the aperture at ƒ/22 and hitting the lock switch. My D300 is set up so I control aperture through the sub-command-dial, not through the aperture ring. However, I am getting the error FEE!

I put it on my D70 and it works fine with the aperture locked at ƒ/22! How come it ain't workin' on my '300!?

Oh, dear. You might try cleaning the contacts on your D300 inside the mount. Do you know someone else with a D300—maybe another photography-obsessed yearbook staff member? If not, I'd take it to a camera shop and stick the lens on one of theirs if they'll let you.

FEE error means camera can not read data from the lens, cleaning contacts as jonnyapple suggested may help, if not and if it is working on your D70 I would suspect D300 contacts are bad not the lens. Anyway repair is not too expensive.

Just cleaned the contacts—no solution. And I don't know anybody else with a D300. But my camera is under warranty, should I send it in for repair? I think I'll contact Nikon first.

What did you use to clean them? I would use rubbing alcohol or methanol and a dust-free cloth. Did you also clean the lens contacts just in case?

You could always switch to canon. You'd have a 7D tonight. ;-)

You do that, replacing the contacts, if it comes to that, takes only a couple of minutes.

I just found the problem. My Ai-lens coupling is broken. Apparently it is needed for D-type lenses as well. The plastic piece that connects the coupling ring to the aperture ring is missing. However I am able to use the lens by setting the aperture using the ring instead of the sub-command dial. Not a big deal for me, so I'm happy. Maybe I should send in the camera to get it repaired though.

You should of asked me alpha I would have told you to look for the little tab. The D70 has a tab at about the 8 o'clock position so that's why it doesn't get the fEE error. So how did you break the tab off your camera? You must have chipped it off carelessly mounting your lenses right? :^(

Did you buy your lens used locally or online?

I noticed that tab on my D70, but I never understood what it was for. Thanks for the explanation :^)

I think it was my 50 ƒ/1.2 that wrecked it. It's actually not compatible with my camera because it's a pre-AI. I didn't realize that until now when I saw how the aperture ring of an AI/D type lens couples with the camera. Can't be helped :^(

My dad and I spent a good few days bidding on eBay for lenses. It was actually a lot of fun! He was also able to get a 35mm ƒ/2 for his 7D.

The lens is in great shape—just some cosmetic marks. It came with hood and storage case, but not with box and manual :^(

I've got an NC filter from Adorama coming this Friday. Nikon filters are good, right?

Anyway, I'm just very happy I've got my hands on an ƒ/2.8 :^)

As soon as I feel it's safe enough to do something with it. That probably means waiting for the filter. I don't risk expensive glass.

I'll put samples as soon as I shoot some non-human subjects. The lens mainly is to shoot human subjects though, but I expect it is so good I'll end up trying to use it for everything :^)

I think the best part is I get to retire my crappy sigmas :^)

I now officially have three Nikkors, so I'm eligible for NPS lens-wise ;^)

The only downside is the close focusing is like 5ft. What close up filters were you guys recommending the other day? I think it was something from Canon?

Is yours Pre-AI too? I was really pissed off when I realized that my lens is incompatible. I though that it connected to the camera's coupling through the normal metal couple that it used to connect to older cameras, but it turns out that it needs a special "AI" aperture ring.

Possibly, but there's no way I can check because I'm not home and I won't be for a long time. It was the lens that came with my father's FM2, which was bought in the early 80's. So it could be AI.

This would not help because alphanikonrex is missing AI tab on the camera.
To be accurate FEE error means error in aperture information from the lens, it could be the broken coupling ring but it is more often caused by broken contacts on the lens.
D lens are just adding distance (hence D) information as well, for example Voigtlander and new Zeiss lenses are just AI (Aperture Information) and not D.

Johnbr's suggestion may actually help.

If I get my D300 fixed, then there's no way I'll be able to use my 50mm ƒ/1.2, which I can not accept. That's why I'm opting not to fix it. If I can get my lens AI converted then I'll be able to fix my camera.

Thanks for the responses everyone. You guys are more helpful than Nikon—they just said clean the contacts and if it doesn't work to send BOTH of them in.

Pre-AI Lenses work fine on a D40. This is for all you Rockwell haters.
