It'll probably be at PMA 2010. Don't think anything is going to happen this year.
Personally I'm waiting for new lenses to accompany a D700 successor. Hope something good comes out of it. Rumors stay rumors... as I can remember, there were no clear-cut rumors on a 85mm macro from Nikon.. that surprised us all. So who knows what we'll end up with..
Maybe also read the Nikon forums on dpreview. Thom Hogan and M. Lammerse always seem to know more then they can say.. but sometimes you will get a hint from them.Posted 3 years ago # -
Yes I think its pretty safe to say a new body should be out at the next PMA in March. The price of the D700 seems to really be dropping. One could be had now for about $1800 if you shop around.

You know because of this forum I have been really sold on Nikon, but I just got my hands on a D300 and used it for a day, and now the power will not turn on. I have to send it back to Nikon to get it fixed and I did a search for powering issues with the Nikon D300, and I have found that there are quite a few people who have had the same powering issues on the D300 when using an 80 to 200 or 400 VR lenses.
The Reason I am posting this is because I have been reading many of these posts on this forum talking about how good Nikon is over canon. It had me sold on building a set of Nikon camera equipment. I have learned that equipment plays a huge part of the quality of work a person can produce. With the cost of everything these days, you really need to make the right decision when purchasing your gear. Buying something only once is a huge savings to say the least.I have my eye on buying a D4 when it is released, and I do not mind waiting 6 to 9 months to see it hit the market. I know canon is releasing the 1d mark 4 and the spec’s on that unit is really what I am looking for, but from what I understand Nikon has the reputation of making the highest end glass on the market.
My question is simple how much hype am I reading on this forum about how good Nikon is? How can Nikon release the D3s with 720 video when Cannon produces the 1D mark 4? It has the D3s beat in video, pixel size, and meets the specs on the ISO levels for the same price.I have seen many on this forum say that Nikon is just keeping the D3 line going as long as it can so they can make their margins for their shareholders. And they need to keep their time line on releasing each upgrade so they do not disturb their upgrade policies. I know Nikon has made a fortune through the decades, but how can they let their competition get this far ahead of them without reacting? In this digital age we have processors being produced with huge upgrades every 18 months. I know Intel will release a 6 core processor in two months. Now when Nikon released their first D3, Intel was still distributing a single core processor.
Buying a camera set involves much more money than buying a computer. The lenses alone cost as much as a nice computer. And once you are committed to a company, you really need to stick with them. With Nikon’s casual approach to releasing updated products, is it wise to wait for them to make a competitive camera? Please know that this question never entered into my mind before the D300 failed, and I dug into how many other people were seeing the same failure rate on their camera. I am just puzzled on which company I should invest my hard earned dollars into! If you wanted to enter into the camera market in the next 6 to 9 months which camera would you buy (assuming the D4 will be released by next summer)?

I'm sorry to hear about your D300 problem. If you bought it locally and only had it a day or so , I would go back to the store I bought it from and see if they can replace it for you. All they have to do is get permission from Nikon. I had two D300's and they worked great. Have traded one in for a D700. My D300 has about 30,000 shots on it. Will probably trade it in for the D800 or what ever it will be called.

Nikon is a great company with great products, and Canon is a great company with great products, as well. If you need 1080p video you should probably go with Canon because it doesn't seem like one of Nikon's priorities right now. One thing to be careful about is reading too much into some of the numbers in specifications. Just because a setting is available doesn't mean that you'd want to use it in most situations. And just because a sensor has more megapixels doesn't make it necessarily better. You have to think about what it will be used for, specifically the eventual print size you expect to create (for web images, resolution is and has been a non-issue for years).
Sorry about your D300. I'd never heard about that issue—I hope things go well getting it fixed. Keep us posted.

Sorry about your D300 problems, I shot Canon before Nikon, Had power problems, Canon could newer get my 24-70 2.8 to work right, and my Canon 70-200 2.8 was not even close to be as sharp as the same I have from Nikon
The Nikon D3s is in my humble opinion the best sports Camera you can purchase today for taking pictures, but if you need a camcorder then at this moment you would have to go the Canon way.
Yes Nikon is a bit slow at getting certain features on the market, Canon likes to hammer out the highest specs regardless if they work or not
I am not going back to Canon again

ddg - well, the fact that some camera fulfills iso specification doesn't mean that the IQ is comparable, canon is app 2 stops behind nikon in IQ in high iso; as for d4 You shouldn't expect one before 2011 - that's nikon cycle, and I doubt that it will be changed for the case of what... users needing full hd, no way. as for the video option, the question is how many of us will actually use the full hd video function and how many of us will use the high iso, for me the answer is clear.

Thanks everyone for your insight, and I really appreciate your honest opinions about these products. I am also glad to see Pete mention his decision to switch from Cannon to Nikon as well as all the other kind words. I sent off my D300 to be fixed and I think I will just use it for the next several months to see what follow ups Nikon will have in their upper line of cameras. I cannot see Nikon not releasing the D4 in the next 9 months especially with the Canon 1D Mark 4 in the mix. It is suppose to have a decent upgrade on their autofocus, and it shoots 10fps for action shots. I know everyone is waiting on a Raw image to review, but I feel certain that they will bring a high quality image to the table with this unit. I have a good feeling that Nikon wants to see Canon’s camera in production before they release a major upgrade to compete in the long term. Waiting a full year to respond would be hard on their sales to say the least. When money is involved, people do not let grass grow under their feet!

HD video is a resource to everyone. For someone to just completely disregard a big feature is not reasonable. They make an HDMI port on the camera to plug into a HDMI TV which typically is a 1080p TV, why would we not want to have a full featured camera when we pay over 5 grand for it? I assure you having HD video is not the reason I am buying the camera, but it is like shopping for a car and buying a Mercedes and it not having a cruise control that can be set when the car’s speed is above 55 mph. I rarely ever use the cruise control on my “Ford truck” but it is nice to have that cruise control when I need it at any speed.
I am not out to give Nikon a hard time. I just want to me the buyer to get the most for my money. I know Nikon has a great reputation in producing great glass, and the D3 line has been a successful product. I also know that the D3 line has been out there a long while in this age of technology. Advances are happening every month and it is what brings us all to these forums to find out what is in the pipe line for future upgrades. Buying a D3 for full price at the tail end of a production run would be a letdown to say the least!
