As most know, my head shots are candid, an attempt to show people in the most accurate way I can. Here is one, focus is fairly deep, this to show the detail which is about the life of the individual.

    Lincoln County, South Dakota

D4, 85mm f/1.8 Nikkor G, 1/320, f/9.0, ISO 800. Even at the high shutter speed, with candids, sometimes a very slight motion blur can occur...hardly perceptible, but present on the 3000 pixel size.

And, folks, do not forget to go back to the end of the September PAD and see some nice shots.....

    Astonishing clarity and details msmoto!

Always a good idea to look straight up to get a unique perspective sometimes:

I'm sure a few of you can relate to this. Yesterday about 9AM I got a call from my granddaughter. "I need my senior pictures taken", she said. I said, "OK call me next Friday and we'll see how the weather looks". She then informed me she needed the picture for her year book on Monday morning(next day). There was a downpour outside at the time. So we waited until 1PM and got lucky with a break in the weather.

Nothing like waiting to the last minute.

    I hope it's acceptable.

Framer, let me ask as I'm very much a student of flash photography...your shutter speed was 1/750 but you accomplished fill flash. Did you use high speed sync (FP mode) for this photo? I've never tried it but would like to learn your technique here. Many thanks.

msmoto: nice portrait, I see lots of character; likely a blue-collar worker who spent lots of time working outdoors - that and the smoking aged his skin beyond his chronological years. Using a large aperture would have ruined the shot.

framer: very nice, 105mm and f2, nice bokeh and yet both eyes in focus. What was your focal point?

Juergen: nice, makes me think we are sissys when we complain the controls on our cameras; she is shooting moving cars with those controls!

I'm not that close it was a 3/4 body shot, allows greater DOF further back I am. The eyes are almost on the same plane. Focus point without checking would be the her right eye which is the one on the left in the photo.

What a wonderful start to the month!

It's an even better day as it's my 1 year anniversary with my favorite model. And lacking the time to shoot over the weekend in lieu of celebrating here's a back catalog shot of my wife.

It's still my favorite shot of her (but one of her least favorite for some reason)

framer: interesting, so your focal point was the far eye, not the near eye. I was wondering if it was the bridge of the nose between the eyes in an effort to get both eyes within the zone of focus.

graybegal: very nice - and you didn't need a super expensive body or lens, did you? Goes to show you that one doesn't need to spend big bucks to produce a great photo.
