Not true. Nikon has had many product announcements between the months of Jan and May. The D2HS, D40X, D60, and D5000 were all announced between the months of January and May. They've also announced numerous COOLPIXES and lenses too.

@NikoDoby - If I'm not mistaken the Pop Photo comment was a general $1,500 and not referring to Nikon. I remember that article as well but I couldn't find it. Allot of people were speculating Pentax to come out with a FF in that range.

Yes I know they didn't mention who was bringing out an "affordable" full frame camera. I was just mentioning it in hopes that it would be Nikon and not canon or Sony.

D4 specs sound good. Still probably $4,500 more than I'm willing to spend. May give a good idea where the D400/D800 is heading. If the same ISOs can be used but just cleaner, I'm good with that. Shooting at 102k even 64k is ridiculously good, but usable is the true question.

@shivaswrath - LOL - I've been dumping DX lenses for two years now! 12-24mm and 35 1.8 is all that is left!

Now that we are about a year off from this thread, do you guys think these specs are still achievable for Nikon or are they a bit to overheated. I do think they may introduce another autofocus which was rumored a year ago. It may have a huge impact with the video as well as stills. However, please know that this is just my opinion. I just really wanted to see some chatter about the D4 to keep my hopes up for another 10 months!

Wouldn't this D4 be an awkward addition to the D3x? Or would Nikon follow quickly with a D4s at 27 MP, lower ISO and slightly slower?

BTW, I'd doubt they would be able to improve ISO by two stops while increasing MP by 50%.

The fact that that's actually a problem now is amazing isn't it ;^) The auto focus is got to be killer on the D4!

You know come to think of it. This could explain why Nikon chose to bring out a DX lens with the D3S. If Nikon unveils a "low end" "D10/D500" FF, in February 2010,then a new DX lens would be overshadowed by the FX camera. All of the New or updated FX glass can be showcased along with the brand new "D10/D500" FX instead of with the upgraded "S" D3.

Actually, the area of the sensor is about 2.25x smaller, so 18 Mpx FF gives you an 8 Mpx crop mode. Even the D3x's 24 Mpx only gives you about 10.7 Mpx in DX crop mode. I don't know how much it really matters, since I think for most people the benefits of FF would outweigh having a high pixel density. But still, for those that do want/need it, a FF camera with the pixel density of the D300 would probably be prohibitively expensive (it would be 27 Mpx).

OK, I've not yet used ISO 100k, But I've seen the test shots, and it works in the dimmest of light. That being the case, going another 2 stops higher would get you shutter speeds suitable for darker than moonlight.

How are you going to compose a shot if its that dark outside? You'd need one heck of an AF assist lamp I'll tell you that much.

I hope it brings us good health and laughter :^)

Whatever the D4 brings it's gonna be drool worthy! As for the $1500 dollar full frame, I can't wait to see it! I just hope it is in fact a Nikon.

I don't think Nikon will be releasing a higher res model that does ISO 400,000 (2 stops higher than 100k in the D3s.

An optical viewfinder would be useless anywhere that 400k would be suitable. It would have to be live view only LOL.

I will also lean towards d500 as a d90 FF with 12Mpx, maybe even the same sensor as in d3/d700 - would make sense for me

as for DX cameras, once they go above 12 mpx it's reasonable to keep DX only for lower bodies, as 18Mpx will give You a nice 12Mpx camera in 1.5 crop mode

Niko - I doubt it's gonna be 14mpx, but we will see

Not sure if you read my post in another thread (it was kinda off topic) but Popular Photography magazine is also "predicting" a full frame DSLR for 2010 priced at $1500USD. If it's 14,16 or 18mp then it will be a good year to switch to full frame.

The only thing I think that can "save" DX are the low end DSLRs and EVIL DX cameras.

That may be rumored D500, D90 class FX camera ...

It sounds real enough, Nikon pro class line begins with high ISO followed by high resolution model.
18Mpix is more then is enough even cropped.
I doubt we will see it very soon, maybe at the and of 2010.

Probably most of You have read the info on NR Blog about the Nikon D4 field test, if some haven't below is a short sum up:

Nikon D4:
- FF 18 Mpx
- Full HD video
- 10fps
- iso 2 steps better over d3s
- new AF

if the specification will be confirmed I guess I'm gonna switch to FF for my animals shots, as 18Mpx will give me some cropping possibilities - it's gonna work as a 12Mpx in DX mode - fair enough for even the biggest prints.
as for the 10fps, I wonder if it's gonna be in FF, and if so than what will be the speed in DX mode

any comments gals and guys?
