The mass-storage USB option was dropped by Nikon. A card reader is better for a number of reasons, but I found USB mass storage to be very convenient.

I miss it a lot.

On some of the compact cameras (e.g. Coolpix line) you can select what USB protocol you want: Mass Storage or PTP (picture transfer protocol). In PTP the card is not mounted as a drive, in Mass Storage it is. You may want to search the manual for PTP, but I did not find that setting for my D700.

Yeah a card reader works fine, I was just wondering about plugging the USB directly to the camera.

Here is what I did. Place the XQD card in the reader, copy the files and paste into an external hard drive. Then eject the XQD card and you have the NEF files in the external hard drive. Or, I am certain you can do that with a video file as well. Just do not have any photo processing program open which might grab the files.

I tried a search but couldn't come up with the right wording to find anything. Sorry if it's a repeat.

Can you put the camera in a mode that will just show it as a folder on the computer? Specifically in OS X? I Don't want to use NXView or Lightroom to import the Time-lapse and videos from my D600.
