Well it's hard to define my annoyances with the camera, Mostly its the accessibility of the menu options (Or should I say lack of it.)
It's really just the little things that I didn't realize I might need in the future that I now lack which annoys me. If I could go back and change my decision I would, But I can't. All I can do is learn from my mistake and maybe try to prevent others from making the same mistake.

Everything is fine when you set it right before you start shooting and don't have to change anything, But the adjustments to the settings that need to be done trough the quick-menu when needed take me out of my shooting focus/concentration because they require me to take the camera away from my eye and select the right quick-menu item to adjust, adjust it and close the quick menu to continue shooting.
And as I've got limited concentration due to a still unexplained an uncured medical problem, It's starting to irritate and take the fun out of grabbing the camera and going for a walk with it.

I'll explain these medical problems in this paragraph so you can skip this if your not interested in them:
Permanent headache (Day in day out all day long), Dizziness and the already mentioned limited concentration capability. (Along with other minor things. Which also include what I believe are migraine attacks, But my doctors has denied that so far.)
I've seen doctors and had tests taken but they couldn't find anything, Then the sent me away saying it was something psychological, Been treated by a psychologist who didn't believe my headaches had a psychological cause because of the nature of my complaints.
Which resulted in being send back to doctors, Who had some tests done again, With no result again and been sent back to the psychological side for the second time, Which after three years of therapy with no results on lowering my headaches and minimizing the related medical issues.
It did help accepting the fact that I wake up with a headache every day, Even though I will never fully accept it as it's simply unacceptable as long as I'm unsatisfied with how hard the (medical) doctors have tried to find the cause of it.
No doctor I've met has ever really shown interest in my problems and taken it upon him to either find the cause or find someone somewhere who can.
So this brings me to the point where it's the Medical side's turn again, And at the moment I'm not in the mood to go and see them. (I don't trust my general practitioner/family doctor anymore, Been thinking about switching to someone else. Preferably a younger and more open minded one.)
This whole thing has been going on for at least 15 years now, (Started with having a headache sometimes and in 5 years time had grown into having a headache every single day all day long.) And has resulted in me not being able to keep up with school and after I got my high school diploma (Mind you we got different difficulty's for that. And I finished on one of the lowest one's without having to do much studding(If any) for it because it was a lot lower then what I could have been capable off), I did six moths of Vocational Education/Community College? (Of which I'd finished only 1 moth of work and was 5 moths behind on the rest of my class) after which I had enough and quit school, Applied for a specialized welfare/social security form meant for young people who are unable to work due to a medical or psychological condition (Called Wajong.) was excepted into it and have been sitting at home unemployed(And unfit for work) for the last 7 years (25 years old right now, Quit school when I turned 18 as you're Legally required to go to school until your 18 here in The Netherlands)
Living with my mom and dad and not wasting money on things I don't need have kept my expenses low allowing my to safe some money into a savings account. (There are people who receive Wajong that complain it's not enough to cover there monthly expenses. Don't ever take those people serious, There either ungrateful bastards or there just doing it wrong.)
And as I got bored with the few hobby's I had, I looked for something new and thought photography could be something for me so I bought the D5100+18-55 VR a year ago to try it out and soon after registered on these forums.
In that year I bought three additional lenses (35mm+50mm f/1.8G and 105mm f/2.8 VR Micro) and the SB-700 flash, So yeah I've been enjoying photography so far.

Okay, Back to camera talk:
So more direct control buttons would be welcome, Other things I want are micro adjustments for my primes, AF motor in body for older lenses (Like the affordable 24 f/2.8 AF-D), Virtual Horizon, And some other things.
Oh here's one more thing though, Commander Flash mode which enables me to use the SB-700 off camera with Nikon's CLS.

But the D5100 also offers some things that the D7000 has to do without, Like the swivel-screen and better placement of the movie record button (although I've never used it.)

So I wont toss the D5100 aside as soon as I'll get the D7000, They will both be used for different reasons and occasions.
I'll probably put the 35mm f/1.8 on the D5100 and leave it there for family photo's and use the D7000 for closeup, portrait, And the more artistic work.

Both camera's are great for what they offer, But they are both in different classes for a reason.

@ Sato... I think I agree with you, but could you be specific about the limitations you have found with the D5100? For me, it is about the accessibility of the menu options, but I would love to hear exactly what your frustrations are. Thanks

Don't get the D5100 if you're serious about photography, You'll outgrow it faster then you'd like to.

I've got the D5100 a year ago when I started with photography and I'm going to get the D7000 within a month now because I'm getting annoyed with the D5100's limitations.

Many thanks, I think I'll be patient like you said msmoto, not like I need it today. Will more than likely pick up the D7000, unless the D7100 isn't that much more, will have to wait and see.

Many thanks for your help both, is much appreciated.

The cost issue is a good point... the discounted price on the D7000 makes it an especially good value. One way to think about this might be to look at photos on PAD which you like, then see what camera was used. Also, the various features, ergonomics, and the menu algorithms are important IMO before making a decision. But, one most likely cannot go wrong with the D7000, it will still be a superb camera no matter what comes along. And, on PAD, we see images which are stunning taken with D40's....

But, sevencrossing, I think you meant to say, get the D7000, not the D700, correct?

correct

if the D7000 is at the limit of your price range the D7100 ( if we get one) is going to cost more

my feeling is the D600 is the D7000 replacement and that certainly costs more

OK, Let's keep this open with a more specific title as the new cameras have made the other threads not as relevant. But, sevencrossing, I think you meant to say, get the D7000, not the D700, correct?

Advice... I was told to wait for the latest version of a body and I did... absolutely the correct advice. If you have been reasonably happy shooting photos with your Lumix, have learned all about the post processing, if you so desire this, and can be patient, I think I would suggest waiting until after the first of the the year. The D90, D300s, D7000 all are due for an update. And, we know the latest sensor on the D3200 is highly rated, better than the D7000, one might expect the next generation of the D7000 will be even better.

The fact the D7000 is selling at less than $1000 in the US, is consistent with an attempt to reduce inventory, as in a new body is coming soon.

If anyone has time to give me any advice, it would be most appreciated.

I currently have a Lumix G1, which I bought to see if photography was something I would be any good at a few years ago. I'm still obsessed with photography, and think it's time to upgrade to a better camera.

I recently handled a friends D5100, and really liked the feel. My freind however is telling me to get the D7000, which I also really like, but keep seeing that an D7100 is due, and don't know if I should wait or not. The D7000 is about the limit of my price range, but don't know what to do.

If anyone has any advise for me, it would be most appreciated. (I like landscapes and portraits if that makes a difference)

Thanks in advance, Darren
