More sensor sizes not a good idea, but I should have also said I would of liked to have seen a 1.4 instead of 1.5 in the first place. Why did they decide on 1.5 and not 1.4?

You laugh now, but when I get my GXR body and project it's superior image quality through the s1000pj I'll be the one laughing at all of you...! ;^)

I have said some bad things about the GXR, but it was only because I was trying to find out why you were infatuated with it, Niko. The s1000pj is a great product. You should buy Pete's entire inventory.

I'm with Pete and John (and Pete and Niko Re: KR). Why not get a bit more area if the lenses can handle it? Just because you don't use something doesn't mean it shouldn't be made. If it annoys you or you're afraid of it, you don't have to use it. That's logic. ;-)

I have always thought 1.4 would be better and wondered why it wasn't made in the first place. If the curent DX lenses would work, I'm all for it. I only have one DX lens, the 18-200mm. As soon as NIkon announced FX, I sold my other DX lenses and will buy only FX. I know they cost more, but they will work on DX also. Lenses are something you keep longer then body's.

I don't think a 1.4 sensor would work for Nikon. Look at Canon which already has 1.3,1.6,1 and the Canuts hate 1.3. They would have preferred the 1Dmk4 to have been full frame instead of 1.3. So I wouldn't be interested in a slightly larger/smaller (D300/D3) Nikon sensor.

I completely agree. Anyway, hopefully my D300 will be my last main DX body.

Actually, the sensor would increase by 21% area, so about 14.6 MP.

I don't think it's a big enough difference to be worth it, frankly. People who really need the extra 1mm (equivalent) on the wide angle will get a D700 (or wait for Nikon to release a 9.33mm dx lens).

I'm guessing the potential issues of vignetting would also make such a camera somewhat unpopular, even if Nikon claims it's fully compatible. I know I'd be hesitant.

No it is not to see if it will actually work on a D700 but from a picture taken with the D700 you could properly measure to were app 1.4 crop would be add

Actually I like the DX crop the way it is. 1.5x is easy to multiply and divide by too. I don't want Nikon to go like Canon, with too many crops of sensors. I don't mind them adding a 1.2x crop to the D3S, I just don't want them to make a third sensor size.

Think about the problem with the 1D series. It doesn't accept Canon's "DX" or EFS (I think?) lenses, so it has to use full frame lenses. That means you can't get any super wideangles without starting another series of lenses, and would just make everything super-crazy.

I don't think that really matters and BTW it looks like we might see a 2.5 crop factor

Anyway I was just wondering what would be the ultimate D300s replacement, because a 1.4 crop 18MP would be certainly be better than a 1.6 crop

I agree alphanikonrex, the 1.4x would have to work with current crop (no pun intended) of DX lenses. We don't need another lens line.

Here's what you can do to test the idea: Is it possible that you take the image in FX mode, and then crop the image 1.4x? Then it will be easy to look for imperfections.

I guess your 12-24 would be slightly wider then, so it would make a big difference on the wide end, but not so much on the far end.
